Need some advice and/or thoughts. I’m about to buy a new Peterbilt 389 to haul crude oil. Seems most of the trucks the dealers have in my area have low air leaf suspensions and are better optioned than air Trac suspension trucks. Any cons to using low air leaf truck to haul crude?

Im running it on my truck hauling tankers where all of our company trucks run air trac. I get a better ride then they do. As far as any other difference's is I had to spec the TALL fifth wheel pedistals in order to get the height right. The air trac trucks frames are higher then the low air.

Yea that’s what my dealer said, just swap 5th wheel blocks. Thing is I’m not always on bad roads lol. Lots of black top. It’ll only be me driving it so it will be babied as much as I can lol

How much ground clearance do you have to the bottom of the bumper? There's a reason why the major oil companies spec their trucks with PLENTY of ground clearance. Sure, there's a lot of blacktop involved, but there are also potholes from Hades that can do a LOT of damage.

I had about 12" of ground clearance with an after market stainless steel bumper on a T2000. During the two and a half years I owned the truck with that setup I replaced that bumper twice. Once when driving at idle speed in 1st through muddy water and I suddenly dropped well over a foot into an unseen pothole (culvert?).

I've seen drivers out there with low ground clearance. It is a mistake. Many many mangled bumpers.

If your hauling over 80k air trac is the way to go, but air leaf rides sooooo smooth

Low air rides better, but doesn't handle rough roads near as well as air trac. that said neither is my choice for ride or toughness either one.

Neway is my favorite, and what a lot of guy specs there trucks with up here.
Better ride, better traction, can't break it, but it is more expensive if you ever have to rebushing it.

I’m stuck with what’s on dealer lots. All I’ve seen is low air and air track in my area. I had a truck spec’ed the way I wanted it and sh%# happened and don’t have time to wait in the build.

I run an 18" bumper. its still about half in above front axle on 379 pete I always straddle deep ruts and while the rest of the idiots drive through the same ones and drrag there front axle and rears ill always shake my head. I did just buy a new bumper but that was because some old bag in a beetle tried to cut me off and my truck won the battle except for the bumper. For the ones that want to run a 20" or even an 18" that are scared of bumper damage, air lift bumpers are the way to go. i see them often. Pretty cool setup.
