Mines cracked. Well its actually cracked from end to end on the curve where the bolt holes are where it mounts to frame. The tow hook is also mounted to this unit. No big deal, 730 bucks from peterbilt. So i said what the hell, i got a used one off a reputable truck parts dealer on the internet and im sure many of you have bought parts from them. I told them to specifically check for any cracks particulary near the bolt holes. 400 bucks for the unit plus 100 for shipping. I get the new/used crossmember today and sure enough, this one is trash as well. Cracked just like mine but its not broken all the way to the end. YEs they are going to refund me. Kinda pissed that the crack is so bad and against my instruction to look for cracks it was shipped anyway. Soon as i open box it was obvious clear as day.
Anyhow, ill get to the question now,
IS this something that usually happens with this crossmember??? Kinda ironic i get another one already broken.
Do i bother even replacing mine?
How the heck they expect a tow hook to do anything if this crossmember is so brittle

I seen it on two Pete dump trucks also. Had local welder plate and repair both. One truck is sold, still have other and has held up well.

Had the cracks welded then plated to beef it up. Running dump trucks requires knowing a good welder or being one yourself!

I prefer to replace as original. Sometimes there were engineering problems and changes need to be made.
My welding is above average for a mechanic-driver. Still far from a certified pipe welder that can make a repair equal to or better than new just welding it back together. If you can find one that can design and engineer a little they are awesome.
Get a new one or have the one you get credit for welded and plated. Just my thoughts.

Cam Roberts and spsauerland Thank this.
