Yeah, they illuminate everything alot better. However, I have been doing some research and I have found that aftermarket HID lights are not legal, unless the car came with them. i.e. Lexus, Cadillac, Infinity. Alot of people get away with it because I doubt they are going to check every vehicle they see running them. Stay away from the cheap conversion kits because some just use a blue bulb that is not truely compressed xeon. This will make your lights actually blue which is illegal and from what I have read a cop will place a sheet of paper in front of your headlights, and if the light appears blue he will more than likely ticket you on it. I am going to try somthing different instead because any well educated officer should know that an 18 wheeler did not come with HID headlights. Maybe the newer ones, I dont know. I am going to look into projection I guess. LED looks cool but alot of $$$.

True HID (High Intensity Discharge) uses a bulb containing Xenon gas. The box that u are referring to is the ballast which creates an electrical arc inside the bulb, i.e. a more intense light. The conversion kits that are out on the market give u a choice of bulb and temperature. This is where u need to know what to purchase. The bulb should be a direct replacement for the halogen that u are removing, the temperature ranges from around 4000K to about 12000K. This is the temperature in Kelvin. 4000K is most close to factory color, a yellowish color. 12000K is a purple, this will most definately get u pulled over and cited. True white is rated at around 5500K so what I have noticed from my experience is that the 6000K is the best choice. It has a very slight blue hue to it, but I seriously doubt anyone would be pulled over because of it. This is just my opinion and what experience I have with HIDs so of course u should do ur own research but I hope this helped. I start CDL school on Monday and my plan is to get a 6000K kit once I get into a truck of my own. Stay safe out there guys.........and gals

I have done this conversion on my truck and it was really quite simple. the hard part is if you're going to true HID's is to find a spot for the ballsts. (Small box for lamp power) As I only installed the single 7' lamps the ballasts fit in behind the lens. If space is really tight, try to use the slim ballasts.
