Looking to buy a 2008 pete 388. One owner truck. Cummins ISX 525HP. 18 speed, 48 inch stand up sleeper, 244 WB (I run in canada too), 22.5 rubber (wish it had 24.5 for looks, but think 22.5 will work fine?), 200K, DPF was just serviced, have all records, etc.
The only major thing that went wrong with the truck is the injector that is used with the DPF. All that stuff was replaced under warrantee.
I'm trading in my 2006 387 with a C15 CAT for this truck as I am ready for an upgrade. I would really like your comments on the 388's and the 2008 stuff. I believe the DPF was only for 2 years then everyone went to something that sprays uria or someing in with the exhaust?
Thanks folks.

the 388's are the same as a the 379 short hoods, except a longer hood/diff headlights/ and of course diff style eng/rad/acc. but overall still same pete but new engine emissions crap. The dpf is still being used on the new along with the urea, the urea mixes into the dpf to burn off more nox before exiting the stacks, just to clarify. But as far as your truck the cummins is a good engine, keep an eye on your coolant level, because even the new cummins are still having egr cooler internal problems, not as numerous as the pre 2008 but still there, also there are electrical and sensor issues with the dpf itself. make sure you read up all you can on the dpf and make sure it is regenerating itself properly. Also be sure the air filters are being changed with the same filters that came factory with the truck and that the seals for the filter housing is being changed, because there have been issues where other brand filters were used and the seals werent replaced or housings werent secured, and the engines were "dusted" and started to have excessive blowby and cummins would not warranty the overhaul because oe filters were not used. I worked for a peterbilt dealership up until may 2009 so take this info for what it is worth, and good luck.

Thank you so much. I will be picking the truck up in a week or so when I get through there. The DPF was changed already due to a problem with number 7 injector that is used to burn the garbage out of the DPF. I will watch the coolant level and keep the stock filters.

like I said make sure to use the oe air filters when you change them and make sure to use the new seal when they are changed, and you should be ok. most of the canister filters were donnelson from the factory but you can call your local pete dealer and give them the vin and they can tell you what it came with from the factory and the replacement part #. Good luck.
