Hi I am a recent grad and I was wondering how some truckers deal with personal safety at night when parked. I have seen police shows where some drivers are sleeping at night and someone will break into the truck and kill or rob the driver. What are some ideas to keep someone from getting the jump on you when you are sleeping? I was thinking when I get my own truck one day maybe some impact resistant windows of some sort or some type of motion detector on the steps that will trigger lights or alarm. Anyone ever had a situation like this?

I'm a light sleeper and anyone climbs up on a step, I'm awake. Not much you can do other than keep the doors locked and keep a tire (head) thumper near the driver's seat, between the seats so you can get to it quickly from the sleeper area. No place is guaranteed safe and no place is guaranteed dangerous. It's a crap shoot where you may park that someone may be in a desperate situation lurking in the trees or the darkness. Guns and trucks do not mix due to laws and regs, but they are out there. If you need to bash somebody upside the head, make sure you hit him hard enough so that he's incapacitated, not just mad. Assume an intruder has some form of weapon.

i dont think is any motion sensor or something like that, but you want a park where is people around example truck stops, not on dark places where is nobody around to help u in case something happend(my opinion).

Having a can of mace isn't a bad idea in my opinion. Have to check your company's policy and want to look at each state to see what the laws are on it. Another thing I found was a battery operated motion sensor alarm that I have thought about trying to rig just above each door on the inside. I haven't bought them yet to try it and not sure if it would even work. They were 15 bucks a piece, they would probably be just enough to deter a person if it went off is all, not really going to do anything beyond that. I know you want to seat belt or tie down your doors on the inside, not gonna prevent someone from breaking the windows and getting in though, but if someone broke my windows I'd be up fast macing em as they tried to climb in, I'd hope anyway lol

Tie a string to one door handle and loop it through your air horn and tie the other end off to the other door. Anybody opens your door and more than just you will be alerted. Nothing like a good trucker ### kicking.

Stop by a wal mart and get a couple carabiner clips. A couple quick clicks and your security system is set every night

A couple of things. The gun thing has been beat to death here. There is no federal law preventing you from carrying in your truck, as well as no state law that differs for commercial vehicles, however you have to make yourself aware of state laws that apply to everyone.
As far as safety, unless your a hot chick, you will be largely unnoticed. The days of truck drivers carrying wads of cash to pay for fuel for three weeks at a time are long gone. In fact, most BFI company drivers barely get by, so the idea of a robbery is fairly slim. I've parked in some of the meanest areas in some of the worst cities, as well as hauled high value cargo. You really don't have anything to worry about, statistically wise. You really won't understand until you get out here.

A lot of drivers could have avoided being the victims of robbery/assault if they had only resisted the urge to let that hooker or drug dealer in the truck. I would suspect that a lot of the crimes reported as 'break-ins' were actually 'let-ins.'

Oh yeah Dogknot. I knew this one driver that got "robbed" every weekend. We all knew how he got robbed. He probably saw the same person each time, too.

I get "robbed" each paychack I get. Some people call it taxes. I call it robbery.
