I would run with it and chance it, since you promised the buyer his trailer. Not everyone has their new plates installed on the first, however, it's your choice. You're talking about the power unit, right? Worse case, you buy a permit at the POE.
-
Just do it. Odds are you will not have a problem, they are not too bad going across there. Just do not give them a reason to look at you, try to stay around other trucks.

what would they do if we get stopped. I already bought the ifta fuel permits. will they just give me a ticket or tow my truck

If mt [ less than 35,000 #}, Florida only writes a small ticket. Not sure of others, but on week-end not much DOT activity. What part Florida ?
-
If you are caught they could shut you down. They could require you to purchase a trip permit and also could write a ticket for not having proper registration. If you have a bill of sale you may want to keep a copy in the truck in case you are stopped. If you know a dealer who can sell you a temporary tag, you might give them a call. You could get lucky and not have a problem. If I were driving a truck with an expired base plate I would not want to cross an open scale.

If you decide to go for it, I would go over the weekend. There is usually less dot activity on weekends.

I would think there's an "un-official" grace period for registration. They allow a few weeks for 4 wheelers, right? IFTA has 60 days, right ? Many trucks are working and not home on the expiration date. To clarify, installing the IFTA stickers, you have 60 days.

IFTA runs on a calender year. There is a grace period at the beginning of the year, but I don't think that there is a grace period at any other time of year. If the truck is on the road it is supposed to have the stickers on the side. In the case of the poster, he has his IFTA, but his registration has expired. I would not think that there is a grace period other than when you first purchase a truck. In fact, I am not sure that there is a grace period then. If you purchase a car you are supposed to have either a permanent tag or a temporary tag before it leaves the lot. If you just purchase a truck you might get away with having a temporary cab card and tape it to the windshield. You may even get away with driving for a few days without a tag or cab card. I would not want to chance it. However, if I were to do it then I would want to do it on the weekend. Of course, if it were not on a weekend he could call his state IRP office and check with them.
