We used to be with a company that had the GPS through peoplenet and now we have a QUALCOMM with no GPS so we use a rand McNally 730. Recently we got a mount for our smart phone and are thinking of getting an app for truck GPS to back up the 730 and are hoping we can find an app based on the technology that powered the peoplenet GPS. Does anybody know if such an app exists? If not what is the best smart phone app to purchase for truck GPS.

Peoplenet uses co-pilot. You gan get the same maps from there, although routing may be diffrent.

My humble advice is to NOT use smart phone apps. At least while driving. You can buy several new gps systems for what one cellphone usage ticket will cost ya. Just reaching for your phone can get ya. It doesnt matter why you are using it. I was thinking of getting rid of my SiriusXM and using Pandora for music. Until I was reminded of how much the fine is for piddling with my phone to change the music. Can have XM for about 15 years for one cellphone usage ticket. Now, of course, using it as a backup to your 730 before driving is a different story. For that, I think you cant beat a good old paper atlas.

If the phone was in the mount and running a GPS program how would that be any different from a GPS running on it’s own screen?

Its the government. Currently you can use a GPS device. But not a smartphone. You are right. There really is no difference. Except to them.

Actually you can't. The regs state a handheld electronics device. A phone as well as a gps qualify.

If it's mounted on your dash it's not being handheld. I believe there is a distinction. Georgia has banned holding your phone period, but you can use a hands free device.

Whatever you use, make sure it is uploaded or backed up to the cloud. Been through this computer crap, a hard drive failure, theft, virus, etc. You need to keep these records secure. The dog eating your log book ain’t going to fly come audit time. ;-)
