Just curious...Do most trucking companies offer a pension plan as part of their benefits package and if so, how many years are required before qualifying?

Don't know about other companies but ABF Freight offers fully vested pension after 5 years. It's an LTL company.

Pensions are with unions. Mine is 5 years. Are you thinking of 401k?

Most are 401K and start in 30/60 days depending on company policy.
I managed my own funds though through the company 401K and put 75% in overseas Asian funds and made a killing. Asia is still booming with no end in sight.

Hey CT, glad you don't have your $$ in oil stocks or oil ETFs LOL.
China is def on a rip after being walloped. You just have to watch them carefully because they do have a boom and bust mentality.
My input on investing with co 401K plans is to try and get into a ROTH 401K. A better situation because they're tax free when you qualify to pull the money out. Also the money that is a Co match is tax free. So in essence you're getting free money from the co.
It's a sweet deal and an incentive for you to stay with the co. I've done very nicely over the years with these plans.
Just hope the companies out there offer them. Sometimes they don't unfortunately but c'est le vie.
    good luck.

I didn't know pensions were connected to unions. Probably a 401K then or possibly an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). I had a 401K but then when the #### hit the fan back in 08 and 09, I lost most of what was in it.

Frankly, many companies have either cut back, or done away with 401 k plans. Those people that still have them are lucky. One company I worked for, offered a nice 401 k plan, and put in a matching amount. Then they did away with it, giving us options to roll over into our own plans.

I'd nary trust anymore pension plans, even though they are supposed to be backed up by laws. I wish I knew all there was to know about pensions and Roths and 401k plans, but I don't, this is why I have an accountant/financial advisor.
