So I've been looking on the load boards that let you look around for free, one in particular I'm looking at is express.transcore.com

What are load rates like for partial loads? I was searching around and found a load from Lansing, MI to Ontario, CA that was like 5 feet and 3k lbs. Would they still pay like $1.20-$1.30 a mile for that? Seems like you could find a couple of other partial loads, put it on your truck, and get like $3 a mile average all the way to California! Seems like a good week to me, but sometime is telling me those small loads pay a bit lower than what a full truckload would pay for the same trip.

It all depends. Sometimes a partial will pay full rate. I have a shipper who occasionally ships a 10 foot piece out west that pays 2.40 per mile.It fits right on my top deck. It is far easier to LTL with platform trailers vs box or reefer. Sometimes the broker will think you should haul that load you posted above for $500, hoping to find someone with a load that didn't take the whole trailer already going near or through there. The biggest problem with LTL, is once you commit to going by putting a partial on, you're committed even if you don't find other freight. I've won some and lost some. Generally I now wait until have the main piece paying enough to get me out there at an ok rate, and then add from there. Oh yeah, an OK rate isn't $1.30 in my book.

    Thanks for the info, fortycalglock.

Looking around at the load boards, I was told a one trip load from MI to CA would pay around $1.30 a mile. Maybe someone who runs out east with customer freight would take the $1.30 as a "backhaul" to get back, but for an O/O, I really don't think there is such a thing as "backhaul". I would run anywhere that paid. But $1.30 a mile isn't going to work for a 2,100 mile run. If it were partial, I could put a couple of loads on there and that would make it worth it.

I wouldn't start my truck for $1.30 per mile.

I've put a few partials together and done ok but most of the time they don't pay enough to mess with.

Partials can usually work well for you of you can get a full truck rate on a light load and then throw a partial on with it. The rate for the partial will depend where it is at, where it is going to and loading/unloading times.

For example, a partial picking up in the same town as you are picking up your main piece, and going to relatively the same area it is going can pay a little less if I were to do it. But if that partial is now going to a downtown location, I will charge a little more. Really each and every load is different.

You also need to realize that brokers will want you to pick up their "LTL" and then drive it straight thru an make delivery in a day or two. That is not an LTL shipment. An LTL shipment has enough time for you to add more freight to the truck and you should be able to make the delivery date and time with the customer. Brokers will push many loads as an "LTL" to justify cheap rates.... In my book, a LTL is under 10' and weighs no more than 8,000# and should always pay at least $1.50 to the truck for each mile you hail it.

I have a friend that loves ltls and does well coast to coast, I tend to stick more on the eastern end of the us and never have much luck putting a good load together. 25 feet and 23k at less then a buck a mile is not an ltl, its highway robbery.

    SHC Thanks this.

Best bet is to find more partial loads that are going to CA or on the way there and youll get good $$ doing that. I work for company that does multiple stops all the time.

Last month i saw some partials. 5 if i remember right. Picking up each day of the week. The rate for the miles was disgusting. And the bounce to pick em up. Was 300 miles from civilization.

If a guy could have taken all 5 partials. He would have done allright. They all picked and delivered to the same place. Don't know why they had to be shipped one at a time.
