I'll be starting with a company soon that runs paperlogs. I used to run paperlogs whenever I first started out in 2007 I've forgotten a lot of "tricks of the trade", I know I'll get a lot of crap about that statement alone but, never the less, I always heard paperlogs drivers tell me to either fuel up before the start of my day or at the end of my day. I know it has something to do with in correlation to the paper logs just never did ask what it was exactly. If any old school older truckers care to explain please feel free to do so. Thanks in advance.

You must show fueling as on duty not driving. When they check your logs they may ask to see receipts and see if they match up.

The idea behind fueling at the beginning or the end of the day as you can either show it along with a pre-trip and only use 15 minutes or along with a post trip and only use 15 minutes instead of 15 minutes for a pre tripor 15 minutes post trip +15 minutes at some point during the day feeling

The good old days, way back before computers. You stop for fuel, go in and pay. The person behind the fuel desk says "sir, what date would you like on the fuel receipt" Driver says "just leave it blank, I wont be here for 2 days". Tricks of the trade are hard to come by in this automated digital age. You will figure out how to shave 15-30 minutes here and there. When fueling, make sure the time matches, fuel for 15 minutes then jump in the sleeper or off duty before or after fueling. Same for loading/unloading. If it takes 3 hours show an hour and show taking a nap. Just remember there are a lot of time stamps these days. Toll booths, fuel receipts, some BOLs, red light cameras etc, etc.

Back in the day, coast to coast run, you're sitting at the truck stop cafe. you have 3 different log books spread out on the table, Reconciling 3 books into one. You look up and 4 highway patrolmen walk in for lunch, you nod at each other. You continue your paperwork, they enjoy lunch.

Times have changed, some for the better some worse. But one thing for certain, there is way to much traffic to be stupid. To easy to go broke from an accident or worse, prison for manslaughter just from being stupid and wanting to run like we did in the old days.

Be safe and smart. It doesn't have to be your fault. If those paper logs are very far off, you are screwed. Be Safe and Smart

I used to have really bad luck with fuel slips getting wrinkled and ripped in the date area, not to mention how the sun on the dash must have been so much hotter back then, cause the dates would get really dark on the thermal printed toll receipts.

In the olden times you could save some time by doing a Pre-trip & Fueling at the same time. I think paper logs could only be accurate to nearest 15 minutes. If you logged a combined PTI & Fuel you could log one 15 minute segment. If you logged PTI & Fueling as separate events it would require two 15 minute entries on paper.

You do realize you are required to log it as you do it, not throw everyone's tricks at a log page until you get caught, I hope.

I still do that with the ELD. Not sure why, other than habit, because it's been quite a long time since I had to worry much about bumping my 70. Actually, I remember just "flagging" a few PTI or fuelings. "If it took less than 7 minutes..."

I give a vote to fueling at the beginning or ending of the day....if that's possible. If not, show 15 min, and make sure it matches when you use that fuel card. You never know when your company will get audited.

I wish I could ask the president of OOIDA, why the heck did they “fight” to keep paper logs, instead of going after the Hours of Service which are the problem in the first place.

i’ll give some credit to the FMCSA, having onduty time count towards the 30min break has been a godsend, as well as more split sleeper options.

We need more Exemption abilities, and use the current HOS as a guideline and not an end all be all system.

Guys, we’re tracked, and must be accountable for 24 hours of our LIVES while operating a CMV. (Im talking for us OTR guys).

Give me a logical reason why there aren’t any exemptions for us to go over said hours when we see fit. It is all being tracked anyway.

Before some of you derail my post with your theories of “what if” and worse case scenarios. All I am saying is, we need more exemptions and freedom of these hours of service.

sleeping 10hours because your clock ran out 2-4 hours from your house, after you’ve been gone for 2 months… plus countless more scenarios.

In my State, they are proposing amending the State’s Constitution because some language is “offensive”. Yet, no one has brought a fight and a sensible PRO Trucker revised Hours of Service.
They have third party groups trying to lobby to reverse the on duty time counting towards the unnecessary 30 min break.

Anyway, rant over. OOIDA and other groups really dropped the ball back in 2017. Can’t believe it’s been that long already. Wow.

OOIDA dropped the ball long before 2017. The original ELD mandate was going to be for bad actors only, those carriers with a lot of problems with the hours of service. And for some reason OOIDA thought that needed to be challenged in court. I don’t know, maybe a lot of their members at the time would’ve been forced to run an ELD or something.
