I'm sorry I'm sure this has been talked about before, but I'm running a tractor trailer for 8 consecutive days and 8 days only in August. Can I run paper logs?

what are you doing with the truck? the reason i ask is because if it is for personal use, then no log book required.

    MercySakesAlive Thanks this.

Is this your company or are you working for someone?

    How old is the truck?

Do you have an ELD installed in the truck?

If so, is the ELD functioning?

If you don't have one, then you may have to prove you are getting one and do paper as a "backup".

Paper isn't the problem, it is the circumstances in which you are using the paper that matters.

    tscottme Thanks this.

8 times in 30 days is an eld exemption. Paper is fine.

Thanks for answering my question (without putting me through an interrogation process.)

IF the normal usage of logging isn't an ELD. If he normal has to log on an ELD, the new truck most likely, depending on usage, will have to be an ELD too.
Not an interrogation @MercySakesAlive but this is an important question. Do you normally drive a CMV that requires logging?

    tscottme and MercySakesAlive Thank this.

Basically the rule is 8 days in 30 for Record Of Duty Status (logging). So if logging is required more than 8 days, doesn't matter the truck, ELD is required.

tscottme, Bean Jr. and MercySakesAlive Thank this.

Hey Bean Jr, Thank you. I'm renting a truck from Penske. The truck is being used for exactly 8 days from August 1-8 to drive interstate. I drove a CMV on July 18, 19, and 25 for a different company that uses an ELD. I drove for yet ANOTHER company on July 22 and 23 for a local job using paper logs. What do you think? Paper or ELD for the Aug 1-8 job.

Assuming none of the dates listed qualify for a time card exemption, legally you have to run an ELD as you are now outside the 8 days in 30 exemption. Well unless you are doing something else that is exempt like transporting the truch itself.

tscottme and Bean Jr. Thank this.
