Could someone please tell me what "pallet exchange" is and how does this effect an owner operator?

If you go pick up a load on 22 pallets, they may want 22 empty pallets in exchange. Then when you deliver, you can get 22 empty pallets back, etc.
Can get interesting if one place does/doesn't want to exchange or need empties.headbanger Thanks this. -

It should be on your BOL if the load is pallet exchange or not. If it is, the receiver is supposed to give you as many pallets as you delivered. If you delivered a palletized load of 24 pallets, the receiver should give you 24 pallets in exchange. If he doesn't, you can be charged for the pallets. I always ask for a pallet exchange anyway, even if it's not an exchange, if the receiver isn't paying attention, then you're money ahead. Helps pay for that free detention time.

Many shippers do not consider the pallets the product is sitting on as part of the load. So, they want you to provide replacement pallets for the ones they are giving you as part of the load. They will check the quality of the pallets you are giving them so check every one as you buy them.
On a level of credibility pallet dealers fall below car dealers and just above dog poo.VisionLogistics and headbanger Thank this. -
if you do a palllet exchange make sure you go through the pallets before they put them on your truck.most recievers will give you their crap pallets
