I have over 1000 shipper leads with the transportation managers email and direct contact information. That has to be worth something to somebody doesnt it? I actually have a disc with a major major freight brokerage that is talked about on these boards daily with all of their customers information (A broker that most of the trucking companies despise).

What is something like that worth to a carrier or broker getting started? There is nothing easier than calling a company to solicit your business when you have the name and email to the personnel in charge! ; )

taxi2010 and Lady K Thank this.

Honestly? It's worth about the price of a stamp. Experience, and Google are your friend.

Nothing personal to Midwest2Northeast but if it is proprietary information taken from a brokerage / trucking company then anyone using, possessing, or trying to sell it is committing serious crimes. Personally, I'd stay away and like already stated there is a public index of shipper information available by searching SIC codes and via Google.

When you call a traffic manager you have to have something to offer. Something to differentiate yourself. You can say you provide better service, but he has to actually try you to know if that's true. Everybody "says" they give better service. Think of it- why should he choose you over Landstar, CHRW,etc. It's not as easy as you might think. Some people just go in and cut rates to try and win business. That's attractive to a shipper but not if they can't deliver service. No substitute for hard work developing relationships

I'm a broker, and it's definately worth a great big waste of time

circa 2009 a competitor of ours called it quits due to all the DOT BS and regs and what not. He asked us to buy his business. The portion of the business that he was selling amounted to a worn out old Volvo I didn't want, a worn out old trailer I didn't need and a list of ~50 of his customers. We paid him $13,000 for the 50 names and his trailer worth ~$5,000 so I guess we paid $8,000 for the list.

33% of the customers on that list would have called us anyway.
50% never did any business with us presumably because they found cheaper product closer (or maybe he sold the list to another competitor)?
17% we still do business with today.

We made the $8k back before the first year was over but we were in the exact same niche business and we were only 150 miles apart so the synergies worked.

Get ahold of the Red Book or Blue Book and it gives you the names of Shippers/receivers,brokers,trucking companies, ratings, for produce and dry freight good thing i kept all those things after 27 years of being a broker sure helps alot now that I'm starting a trucking company.

Good luck to you on starting the trucking company.

You know the old saying, if you want to leave trucking with a million dollars in your pocket.....start out with two.
