We are O/Os and recently added our son to the truck driving with my husband. We are trying to come up with a fair way to pay, i.e., percentage of gross, by the mile, etc. How do you split it fairly?

Also we are talking gross of what the load pays before the carrier%, fuel or anything is taken out.

I would pay by the mile but thats my opinion
if you pay by a % of the load what if lets say the husband drove 700 out of 800 miles for a run, you want to pay your son based on that load still? unless you base it on the 100 miles driven then pay him 1/8 of the % of the load.
To me by the mile is more fair since you get paid for the time put in, of course are you going to compensate him for detention time etc?WesternWheels2 Thanks this. -
If I'm reading correctly, your Son is now teaming with Hubby, right ? So, lets get to basics. The truck makes a certain amount. From that amount, all expenses get paid. As an example, the truck revenue for January is $12000. Out of that 12 grand, all expenses get paid, including fuel, truck payment, repairs, insurance and of course driver salary. So, if Hubby is getting $4000 net after all expenses running solo and then adds Junior as a driver, the truck should be able to run twice as hard, doubling the revenue, but also doubling some, not all expenses. For instance, the truck payment will be the same, registration the same, insurance the same, maybe a tad higher for additional driver. However fuel will double and repairs and truck will wear out quicker. In theory, team drivers split the pay. In reality, the newbie on the truck should get less pay, since he needs training and seat time. Consider the additional revenue by adding Junior as a driver and come up with a fair pay. Just curious, are you O/O's with authority and truck/trailer, or are you leased on to a company pulling their trailer ?

You might want to do a graduated scale. $2.50-$3.00 per mile load 40-50 cents per mile driven. $2.00-$2.50 per mile load 35-40 cents per mile. And so on. You could just get it done and go in the 40 to 50 cent range and be done with it.
