I'm reaching out to the community for some guidance and advice regarding a situation I've encountered in my trucking operations. I've recently obtained my own operating authority, aiming to leverage it to secure more direct contracts and potentially increase my profitability in the long term.

However, I've hit a bit of a roadblock. Most of the hauling jobs I'm finding, especially those related to sand hauling in the oilfields of West Texas, don't require the use of my own authority. Instead, they require me to operate under their authority and insurance. This has left me questioning the best course of action to take advantage of my own authority while still engaging in these opportunities.

Given the specifics of the industry and the region (sand hauling in the oilfields of West Texas), I'm looking for advice on how to navigate this. Should I continue seeking jobs that allow me to use my own authority, or are there strategies to make the most out of working under another entity's authority and insurance? Any insights, experiences, or recommendations you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and help. Looking forward to your responses.

    Best regards,

If you can find a profitable arrangement with a well run company, lease on. Less drama. If you cannot, build your own empire. The roadblock you are speaking of is called competition.

There’s the old adage “There’s always room at the top”. Of course, what you never hear is how steep the mountain is to get there.

I agree with you with one exception, competition isn't about just another company, it is about what someone has to offer. He is talking about contracted freight, which is highly competitive and one truck may work in some small regions but overall unless they have an in with a company or proven they are the right person for the job, they will not even bother talking to someone about it.

    Thanks everyone for their answers,
My goal is really to try to make as much money as possible with my truck. My story is simple. I was trading for five years, living very well off trading, and a year ago, I made a mistake and blew up my investment account. So, I returned to trucking. I bought a truck and came to the oilfield , which is how I made my initial investment money and is what I know. So, I want to make as much money as I can with my truck. I'm new as an owner-operator. I worked in the oilfield hauling sand before, but never as an owner-operator. Therefore, I obtained my own authority because I was advised that it was convenient, but now I see that most of the serious companies I find that have work require that I work under their authority. The other companies I've worked with under my authority are basically middlemen between me and the clients, and they charge me money essentially for just giving me loads. So, I want to know if there are any repercussions if I, for example, cancel my insurance and work with the insurance of the company under whose authority I am going to run.

There are ways to de-activate your authority. Talk to the local DOT office.

I would like to keep my DOT and MC, just cancel my insurance. A friend told me if I cancel it though it will be more difficult to obtain in the future is this right?

This is correct. I asked my agent if I was to temporarily try a company job, can I suspend my insurance, she said I could but when when I reactivate, I would be considered a NEW entry, the option she gave me was to just keep the minimum liability and if I come back in business, it wouldn’t hurt me at all.

EDIT: The insurance would double in premiums if I would suspend and reactivate.
