Ok so my tractor and sleeper in 21k full of fuel and my trailer is 11.5 so before I get loaded I’ll be at 32k so to get payload I need to haul 50k (25tons) I haul otr .... so any advice of being over weight ? What kind of fines am I facing with being 2000 pounds overweight ? I have spread axle if that helps ... should I run the chicken coop ? Go around it ? Or ride over scales overweight and let my nuts hang ? Lol but seriously advice from experience truckers on being overweight and advice ! Thanks truckers

Over weight is overweight you can't have 82,000 if the limit is80,000. Some states do allow more on secondary roads like Colorado allows 86,000 on secondary without permit and with permit up to 102,000 with extra axles. Oklahoma doesn't do this they are straight up 80,000 as is Texas. As for hiding from the scale folks yeah you can do it for a while but sooner or later whamo they will appear out of nowhere and most places won't let you move until your down to weight not to mention the 1.00 per pound ticket you could receive. If it were me I would start eliminating stuff from the truck like tools, chains, tv, refrig, any and all stuff to get down to the weight needed. How much fuel do you carry its 8lbs gal. Do the math 100 gallons is 800 pounds if you have 150 gallon tanks that's 300 take away 150 that's better than half at 1200. Good luck on your venture.

This is too close to trolling.

You are limited to 80000 Gross weight with a typical 18 wheeler, spread axle included.

Make two trips if you have to haul 50K or whatever.

Yeah, run the load over a state scale. Can't see the harm in that,,,seriously, when in doubt, wait until dark and go around it. And from now on, refuse to haul 50grand!!!:biggrin_25516:

Idk what state your in. But if 80k is 80k. It don’t matter the spread. You are the captain of your ship. Dump the load out and re load if you have to. No one will get the overweight ticket but you. That should always be your frame of mind.

"semi" retired has it right don't haul if your overweight refuse it. Most gravel pits won't let you go if your over as for grain or ag I can't say just don't do it.

Thanks I know over weight is over weight but I’ve heard so many truckers say they haul over weight because the tickets are just 100-300 dollars if they are caught so i was curious what most truckers thought

I’ll say first hand that I run over weight in town almost always. It keeps our customers happy and business flowing. Buuuut that same customer will turn its head if my trucks get nabbed by highway patrol and put on portable scales. Here in Vegas it’s all about axle count. So most tractors have a drop axle good for 84k on 6 axles. But interstate will still only yield 80k.

It’s not the price of the ticket that’s the problem. That ticket and any other ticket stays on your record. If you ever moved onto greener pastures, they may question why you have overweight tickets. And one can’t simply just say “oh my boss wanted us to do it that way”

You have to ask yourself. If they want you to run overweight and risk your license. Have they ever made profit being legal?

I guess that theory could work, but you gain little, and harder on the truck. Once the cops find you once, the fun stops there. Years ago, when I hauled a dump trailer, running overweight was just part of the day, but we were hauling 6-7 loads a day to a batch plant, and you can't get personal with every load, being paid by the load, and how much you hauled, it was load and go, you'll never make any money getting legal every time. One guy, his name was Ronnie, had a big motor KW, ALWAYS ran heavy. DOT got wise, and tried to stop him, he pulled into a farmers field and dumped the load off before the cops got him. He was quite a hero 'round the gravel pit after that. Cops weren't too happy..THAT'S when trucking was fun, dagnabit,,

I had been talking to my cousin in Nebraska this morning and remembered he ran a grain elevator operation. He informed me that they load there trucks on a scale deck as do most places in the industry. He also stated that the Nebraska DOT will come after them if they load a truck overweight. I don't know what your hauling but the good ole days of running illegal are pretty much over with. The Dot in almost all states won't tolerate any nonsense. Once again just don't do it no overweight period!
