I asked a friend once what the circled sensor was for, and he said it had something to do with trucks. My googling is weak today and I haven't been able to find out, so I thought I'd ask the Benevolent Order of Road Knights. Does it have to do with trucking, and if so, what does it do? Thanks! We have transponders in our trucks. They allow us to bypass weight stations.

Grab our details and weight if it has those rolling scale under it. Weight station give us the green light to bypass or red to pull in.

It's a brain scanner. Next up will be a ray gun to zap the brain dead drivers out there.

Do they have these sensors on all/most highways before weigh stations (US and Canada)? Do they work in conjuction with the "TRUCKS ENTER INSPECTION STATION WHEN LIGHTS ARE FLASHING" signs?

The system only works for truckers that pay a monthly subscription.....Basically it connects to the FMSCA/DOT and responds with info, where you are and if you have an unsafe driving record.

It checks to see if we've showered or not. If we haven't, we are forced to pull in. so every time you see trucks slowing down to go in...

Seriously, the image you posted is for truck weigh stations and a "pre-pass" system, as was noted in post #2. But there are similar readers along busy roadways that "read" various ez-pass and other toll tags mounted in windshields. This system is used to monitor traffic density and average travel times where under-pavement sensors systems do not exist and there are many toll tag users available to "monitor" on non toll roads.
