So your saying they helicoiled 2 of the bolt holes in the intermediate plate??
And re used the valve cover gasket? -
THEY DIDNT HELICOIL THEM, they just left them loose!!!!!!
I’m doing it now!!!! -

Is it not possible since you " argued them down" on price that maybe they wanted to get you out the door. If they had come back and told you they needed 150 to fix the stripped holes would you have approved after previously disputing costs?
Make you wonder............if you had not disputed the original price..........would the job had been completed correctly?
Did you get charged for parts for cover gaskets?
If I was able to count the times I found stripped valve cover holes on a C15 when I performed an overhead, I would certainly be outta fingers and toes.
Not trying to argue, just calling it as I see it.Last edited: Nov 22, 2018
SAR, pup, pushbroom and 1 other person Thank this. -
So, I talked them down to the quoted price and that’s an excuse to half ### it?????...plus, how would the mechanics know what I am gonna end up paying????? -
SAR, Diesel Dave and pushbroom Thank this.

Valve cover gaskets are reuseable. Common practice to reuse them. If you didnt have a leak it must have worked fine.
SAR, spsauerland and Crude Truckin' Thank this. -
seen this all too often. last bit of the job and one or 2 strip.... tech just goes F*** it and tightens the other 4 and sends it. normally it wont leak and when they undo it the next overhead they'll feel those two loose and know to heli-coil them. I don't condone this or think its right but its what I've seen happen many many times.
as for re using the cover seal, they're interference fit around the fastener assemblies and it is common practice to reuse for life of engine. they don't need to be changed every time the cover is lifted or every 65K mile overhead. I can count on one hand the amount of times ive seen a cover seal leak without it being from either a dirty mating surface or stripped cover threads and loose bolts.
I always carry a 5/16" UNC heli-coil kit so I can repair then and there and avoid a disgruntled customer like yourself.
for comparison I charge to do an overhead by the hour.... so generally $350-$600 AUD depending on truck would cover NXS ACERT overheadA5¢ Thanks this. -
