Hello,
This is my first post. My wife and I were thinking of starting a small transportation company in Central Florida. This LLC would at first consist of a single new dumptruck or a new Freightliner Cascadia and dry van trailer. Just for comparisons sake i'll link to both of the models we were looking at:
Semi & Trailer:
2017 Freightliner Cascadia, Pompano Beach FL - 5000904060 - CommercialTruckTrader.com
2018 Vanguard Trailer, Phoenix AZ - 120018216 - CommercialTruckTrader.com
Dumptruck:
2018 Freightliner 122 Sd, Cincinnati OH - 120338453 - CommercialTruckTrader.com
I'm about 45 minutes north of Orlando Florida. I'm two hours east of Tampa, an hour and half south of Jacksonville and about a three and a half to four hours north of Miami. I'm having a hard time deciding which route would be most lucrative and produce the most amount of work.
-In reference to the dump truck, always construction going on in Tampa/Orlando/Jacksonville and Miami isn't far.
-Referencing the semi and trailer I'm near Jacksonville/Tampa/Miami ports and could haul loads to/from the ports.
Just to provide some insight into our plan, I would not be driving the truck. We would be looking for a trustworthy, experienced CDL driver. We'd love to provide a long-term stable job that would allow us to pay a great wage.
Our financial goal is to clear 15K-30K of profit after taxes, gas, maintenance, insurance, and employee pay.
I'm a disabled veteran. My wife and I have fantastic credit with no bad debt. We both plan on keeping our full time jobs ( I work in law enforcement, she works in healthcare) together our annual income is about $110,000. We would be starting this company with grants and a VA backed SBA veteran's business loan. These loans have a much smaller interest rate than traditional loans and allow the borrower to repay over a 10 year period. We plan on using capitol earned from the venture to supplement retirement accounts.
I would qualify as a small veteran company and apparently would have first look at a lot of government work.
I guess my questions are:
Do you think the region is lucrative?
Is now a good time to start a transportation company?
Which type of work/truck do you believe would yield the most work and make the most money?
If anyone could chime in with things I've missed/haven't thought about it would be greatly appreciated!

www.OOIDA.com is a business website for the owner-operator and small fleet owner. I'd study that for awhile before making a decision.

Why does everyone think I'll buy a truck and be rich or business man. How many customers do you have? Do you even know what IFTA is or have a CDL. How much are IRP plates going to cost and insurance cost How about worker comp and social security, unemployment taxes and there health insurance. You won't find a good driver cause good drivers already have good jobs and will be your down fall. I can tell you so many stories of failed trucking companies and drivers caused most of it. There was a local dump truck company had 30 plus trucks and he had five to seven trucks sitting looking for drivers plus 3 to 4 trucks in for repair. He paid union wages 28 hour plus overtime full benefits and couldn't get drivers. He gave up sold it all. Who going to drive that truck when it sitting looking for a driver or he sick or on vacation. Buy rental income duplex then you have something they make payment and in 20 years sell for a profit that where the money is.

Dump truck in FL blows.....
There might be a lot of work going on year round. But rates are low and you have to complete with 3rd world types with their broken down freight trucks.
Add in getting your work from a broker. I’ll assume you don’t have a direct customer lined up and paying someone else to drive it . This is a receipt for going broke........World peace lover and Ezrider_48501 Thank this. -
Never said I was looking to be a 'rich man'...it's residual income i'd be happy with $10K free and clear.

Welcome aboard centralfl, you came to the right place. Quite frankly, these days, you'd be better off selling art supplies to starving artists than run a truck. Years ago, one could do something like that, and probably make it. Many did, I did ok, but I drove my own truck. Today, it just isn't so, and one mistake from even the most qualified driver, will send you and wifey to the poor house for the rest of your life. There's a reason these mega fleets are big and O/O's are fewer and fewer, you just can't compete with the megas. They can afford to wreck a truck everyday, and still continue. And I don't even want to start on what a cut throat business dump truck is. Did that for many years too. Really, I'd look elsewhere for something to do. Listen to terry, housing in Colorado ( where population grows by 90-100,000 people every year) would be a win-win if you asked me.

The best way to start a trucking company is to spend two million dollars. As goes the old saying.
I'll probably end up running trailer trucks with reefer or flatbed out of Florida. There is Chain and Cable that goes west to Texas and Pipe coming back. That would be one route. Another would be reefer work supporting McKesson.
Dumptruck work eh, you will be paying people unemployment in winter if you cannot get work moving in the cold. Or be up to here in contested claims and so forth. Ive done dump for a small owner and it worked out well. But... it's NOT all that and some days you really have a problem when a job begins to smell and stink on your barrel.
If money is not that important to you, don't get involved in trucking. This isnt... tonka toys in the sandbox at recess. Money is everything and by extension people's lives depend on it.World peace lover and 201 Thank this. -
Sounds like sound advice from a reasonable person. I appreciate your insight. I'll keep it as a possibility on the back burner..but will look @ other industries as well.
Thank You.
