I'm new just wondering what happens when you get put out of service? Do you have to get towed to a shop to get fixed or how's that all work.

Depends what you did to get out of service.

If it's a log violation, lots of times you'll have to sit for a complete 10 hour break or perhaps longer. If a mechanical issue, the issue will need to be corrected before the vehicle can legally be moved. Maybe fix it yourself in some situations, have it towed, or have someone come out and fix it. Then a "mechanic's certification" will have to be signed before it can be driven.
This is typical, but there are other situations where other unusual circumstances can play out.Triple Threat Thanks this. -
First time I ever was inspected, there was a guy there doing a 34 hr reset before he could move again.......
My only OOS was due to a flat tire, and the mobile tire truck checked it, aired it up and called it good. Valve stem had stuck slightly open when I checked the pressure the night before...... Things you learn...........LilRedRidingHood Thanks this. -
Sometimes cards will be on bull. board inside scale house that have ph. numbers of road serv. trucks that will come out to fix the truck, the coop at I-55 I-40 W bound at mi. num. 1 before miss. river bridge has a old insp. officer that will pull air lines off trailer and then make driver press brakes on to ck. if any air leaks out of blue line with red button pulled out, the road serv. truck never has them on truck then charges time + MI. charge to travel over to W memphis to get parts.

Michigan is really bad about OOS tickets. Those state troopers like to pull you over on the interstate and then put you out of service. As luck will have it, their old buddy has a tow service and you MUST be towed because you're out of service.

Now, my cynical side has to wonder if the rates those mobile guys charge don't instantly triple as soon as the words "weigh station" are mentioned on the phone.LilRedRidingHood, HorseShoe and truckon Thank this. -
You can repair some yourself, like a light repair if you have the parts or if it was momentary, like a light losing the ground or something.
If you run out of hours waiting for a repair, you need to wait in the lot if you have a sleeper, otherwise a ride to lodgings and back is probably a good course to take.LilRedRidingHood Thanks this. -
If your out of service for truck mechanical issues you cannot leave until someone comes out to fix the issue.
If your out of service for log book violation then you sit at the scale house for 10 hours and wait. If they have no parking there, the DOT officer tells you to drive to the nearest truck stop and wait.
If you drive off and don't head to the nearest truck stop DONT GET CAUGHT because if they find out you are out of service you lose your CDL for a certain time period and get a huge fine.
