Hey guys, I'm new to this business and i would just like to get some info or even an honest opinion. I purchased my own truck and trailer almost a year ago and I just started working for a company as an owner operator about 3 weeks ago. First trip went fine, no problems whats so ever. Second trip was not as smooth partially due to me lacking knowledge and the cop who i dealt with being a little stuck up. i got pulled over for an inspection at a weight station and my log book was the problem. It was my first day out but i didnt fill put a page for being off the previous 2 days. i didn't pull the line for "off-duty" and I got an out of service. I plead the cop, even offering to show him my bank statements for the last couple of days and explaining that i'm new to this but it didn't help. Once again, I know i was in the wrong but come on... I got an out of service for it and obviously had to notify my company.

Two days later, i got called in for an inspection again. Once again, my log book was not up to standards. This time i was missing a signature on one of the pages (the day i got out of service), one word wasn't very legible and i exceeded my 14 hours on one of the days (drove for 10, on duty for 5). The cop was nice enough to give me a verbal warning and explain some stuff to me concerning the log book. Once again, completely my fault as i didn't take this as seriously as i should have...

I spoke with my company today and they are obviously a little concerned. They know I'm new but that doesn't really help us much.

I just started driving and I already managed to get an out of service and one verbal warning. The out of service obviously hurts my company's points and mine, the verbal only hurts my score. How serious is this and did i dig my self into a hole? i started taking the log book VERY seriously, watching tutorials online and taking pictures of it and sending to my brother (driving for 4 years now) whenever i have questions. I'm positive I have it down but I cant help but feel a little paranoid. My company says that these safety violations stay on my record for 3 years and that if i were to apply with another company at the moment, 95% of them would deny me. Is this really the case?

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

No experience and bought a truck?

I had an in-law try that...lost it all...

Not to sound too pesimistic here but log books are just the start...

You would have done well by your career to have started with a company and learned the ropes before starting out on your own..

That being said...as long as you still have a job hang in there..the damage is done but you can work thru it.

What feedback are you looking for?? Once your ### hits that seat you are expected to know what you're doing. This ain't OJT. Stay parked till you learn the logbook.

Yes, it certainly could be the case.....This is the reason why you don't "put the cart before the horse" when entering the trucking industry, I.E. O/O with no experience. Having said that, what's done is done. You're lucky your company hasn't terminated the contract they have with you. If I was the owner, I would terminate it. I don't mean that to degrade you, only to say that any violation and especially out of service is SERIOUS and does effect the company. I don't know what to tell you my friend, other than to say you better get your ducks in a row real fast or you will be out of business soon. BTW, there's more to compliance than just the logbook. The logbook is only one thing they can ding you on in an inspection. Most drivers will agree that the DOT could put a brand new truck out of service for something during an inspection so the odds are never in your favor.

Yea... thanks. Everybody starts somewhere and this is my start. It might not be the way people usually start in the business but I have the financial means to back it up and the truck and trailer are paid for.

My question was how big of a hole am I in concerning my safety rating and safety rating only. Thanks for the replies

Don't worry about the hole you're in. Just quit digging in deeper!! Running logbooks correctly is a minor issue compared to what happens in this business. Learn the basics and the DOT rules.

Getting an out of service on 1 out of 3 trips isn't good at all. You have to be more thorough with "all" paperwork.

You are very very lucky you have not ran into a Cali DOT officer yet, He would have a field day with you. Trying O/O with no experience is very risky, Not understanding the basics of trucking in the USA makes it ever more a risky prop.

better learn the rules of log books quick... and two inspections in just 3 trips, the company you are working for has a big red bullseye painted on them. Bet they have a terrible Safer score.

Chalk it up as a learning experience.....yeah its bad now......and as you hopefully go forward in time without any violations, it will mean less and less over time....
