I will be starting squire training with Knight Transportation soon. My question is after I get off probation and complete my 30,000 miles should I go dedicated so I can consistently get the guaranteed loads and miles. I am just curious cause I have heard newbies will not get much miles and get all the crap loads. I am not worried about having to pay my dues or prove myself , I just don't want to starve and really need the loads and miles. Just seems like dedicated would provide more security.

    Hello Arizona Man.
I've been with my company since 2006 pulling dry vans.
I would first ask if you have already been to a driving school, or will Knight be providing your CDL training. The company you sign on with is important as far as your financial success will be.
If you would like to talk with me, I will be happy to hear from you.

Here is the thing about this industry, nothing is ever consistent. You will get good miles and crappy miles, good loads and bad loads, etc. I have had checks as low as 500 dollars for two weeks and as high as 2200 for two weeks. Staying OTR will give you more opportunity for miles. Regional will get you home more often and still have the opportunity for good miles depending on the company you work for. Dedicated will give you the best chance for having some consistency but can easily limit you when it comes to miles and can burn a driver out with doing the same thing all the time.

Honestly the best advice I can give you is set reasonable goals when it comes to you finances and then find somewhere where you can achieve those goals. Accept the fact you will have good and bad experiences and plan ahead for it. If you are concerned about your finances the most then make sure to budget yourself and set aside any extra money you earn to weather when you have a bad week. Good luck.

Hey James , Knight will be providing my training. It was a convenience thing for me as I live in Phoenix and knight's headquarters and Squire Program are here in Phoenix. Knight also pays $500 flat rate weekly while with a trainer..

That’s what I’m pulling in also. It’s enough to keep you fed. When you are out with a trainer, space will be very limited. So you’ll probably be eating a lot of truck stop food until you can get your own truck and cooler. I recommend packing some breakfast bars high in fiber to munch on while you are driving. Truck stop food will stop up your dumper quicker than anything.
