Sooo created a lost awhile ago. Lol any recommendations on OTR companies that I can do both reefer/ dry van that hire on the west coast, south west, that hire recent graduates? Would like to stay away from north east runs. I’m also in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I’d like to avoid Swift, and all the other mega carriers like US Express, Werner, etc. Thanks!

Why reefer? It's a Bermuda Triangle of long waiting times, not to mention trying to sleep with a reefer running 2 feet from your head. Reefer customers reject more freight than in dry van, flatbed, tanker. Trying to get rid of 4 pallets of rejected broccoli can throw away more hours.

Tanker driving was the best trucking I ever experienced. The customers treat you like a human being instead of a rabid stray dog. I was lucky to get any reefer load loaded/unloaded in less than 4 hours. In dry van it was common to be loaded/unloaded in an hour if you were on time. Tanker customers may have parking on site and actual breakrooms and restrooms for drivers, not just a plastic outhouse on the far side of the property.

Tanker would be cool and all, but I’d rather keep my beard, plus I only have my tanker endorsement and no hazmat. I’m also a rookie cdl a graduate with no experience.

Food grade tanker doesn't use respirators so they seldom require you look human versus a Yeti. I'd rather have a good comfortable job than a beard because hair on my face is just hair on my face. A good job and a steady paycheck is more important to me than some hair on my face. You do you. Some tanker companies hire newbies. EVERY newbie should get the tanker endorsement even if they never will pull a shiny round trailer. It is required for certain freight carried inside or on other trailers. It's a very easy computer test and it never expires. Maybe it costs $20 for the endorsement. Practice tests are online. They ask the same 3-5 questions with different wording. Thick fluids surge less than thin fluids. Baffles help reduce the effect of sloshing fluids, tanker is required to haul a container with 119 gallons of fluid or 1,000 pounds. Just knowing those will get you a passing grade on the test. Indian River Transport and Oakley Transportation (in FL, nor AR).
Every new CDL driver needs Tanker endorsement.

Paint yourself into a corner, you’ll only have yourself and the paint brush to blame.

Reefer trucking; the way to go. I love it; did it for 18 years with no regrets.

It all depends on the terminal you run out of and the products hauled. We run chemicals and several of the drivers at my terminal have beards, including myself. We dot haul some nasty stuff, but anymore, the shipper/consignee does all of the loading and unloading. We stay in the truck or in their breakroom.
