Hello all, I am not a trucker currently, but I own a military surplus M35A2C "deuce and a half" and love it! A little slow but gets the job done. It got me thinking, would an Oshkosh M1070 HET tractor be of any good use as an over the road tractor in the commercial trucking world? 8V92 Detroit Diesel and Allison 5 speed automatic give it a top speed of 45MPH, which is slower than ideal, but the tractors can be had fairly cheap. Any thoughts on this?![]()
Thanks!
Oshkosh M1070 HET for commercial trucking?

Looks like fun if you can turn the speed up to at least 55 mph.
How's the fuel milage?
What do you think @TripleSix91B20H8 Thanks this. -
At 45mph your not legal in an interstate highway.
Go to www.steelsoldiers.com and ask the same question you asked here. Those guys live, eat and breathe that kind of vehicle. Very likely you'll find 1 or more people there that have considerable seat time in one of those trucks and can tell you everything you could possibly want to know about them.
My vote would be that it is very unlikely to work out well except in very limited circumstances.
Let us know what you decide..
Good luck. -
Poor fuel mileage and too slow for most road applications. You seem them being used as haul road trucks though. For instance logging, pipeline, towers, etc where you take trailers off road to load or unload.
91B20H8 and ramblingman Thank this. -

You could not do it. That tiny fuel tank makes it thirsty. The speed is too slow for most fleets. The rest of it, tires in particular would be pretty pricey. Its good potentially for heavy haul but you need to ballast the #### thing with like 50,000 pound cube of concrete before attaching it to a heavy haul.
It's a righteous truck and I love em very much. But frankly it's too much for our Interstate.
However.
Imagine what can be done if they installed say a 1000 horse tank engine into it, 500 gallons of fuel and made just enough transmission and gearing to make it get up and go. You could use it to pull loads in excess of 100K pounds legally in a 4 axle van trailer. I don't know how much money 20K over the standard 80K gross weight would profit to such a truck but it will be a money maker I hope.
The sleeper would be a coffin there is no room back there on those military tires to make a sleeper like we are used to. You might gain the advantage of cross country and rolling through 4 feet of snow... etc.91B20H8 Thanks this. -
Thanks for the answers guys! Yeah they actually have a deuce tractor called the M275 but deuces are very underrated and are only rated to haul 10,000LBS when they can probably haul a lot more. Now an 800 or 900 series 5 ton tractor might do well at 20,000LBS payload with 28ft trailers or something of the sort. While we are on the subject, how do you guys like the 2 stroke Detroit motors?

anybody know what states have a road that can resist the weight of this this truck.

If you paved to something like 4 feet of blacktop on top of 8 feet of riprap stone and ballast you can land million pound planes doing 160 all the day is long.
But most areas pave a few inches thick and call it good. When potholes get too big they patch em.
