I read the article. It stated he was a relatively new employee. This can mean he just started with this company and may have been driving for the last 15 years with another.

The article does not lay any blame toward the driver who was in his truck when the crane fell.

This was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I could have happened to a 30 year driver just as easy at it did to this poor soul.

Nope, he wasn't in the truck. He was standing under the bucket, putting his gear back up. THAT'S a rookie construction site mistake. From the looks of it, the bucket didn't fall far. Which tells me he didn't allow time for the crane operator to get it out of his immediate area.

#1 He shouldn't have gotten under the bucket...period.

#2 If he couldn't avoid it, he should have pulled his truck up.

It's going to be equipment failure, along with employee inattention.

Good point. But I was mainly addressing the comment that it was a new driver. There are other factors. Mistakes on construction sites happen at all levels. One thing that gets most people is never looking up.

It can be classified as a rookie construction mistake, but also done by a driver who has worked at such sites for many years and always took short cuts.

I wasn't pickin. I was just giving my take on it ;) It's still a rookie mistake, driver and construction site. Sadly, it cost him his life.

On the looking up thing. I worked oil field. if someone shouted headache. We didn't look up...we ran for the dog house or V-door. Looking up takes too much time. And the floor is small, so you can get out of the way as fast as you could look up.

If it was a section of drill collar or a bell, it wouldn't matter where we ran anyway.

Not thinking you were. I missed that part.

Anytime I am on a construction site, as a driver or paramedic or fire fighter. I always look up and around. To many times you can get hurt.
