Options besides OTR??

    I was wondering if anyone here knew where/how to look for local, paycheck type trucking jobs? I have done a number of web searches and keep getting only OTR type jobs and companies!! Am I just going to have to physically find & walk into each companies office and ask if they're hiring?

    Is there a secret to finding trucking jobs that have hourly pay & have you home every night?

    I would be very interested in hearing some options and ideas for finding those types of jobs.

    Look for ltl ( less than truckload ) trucking companies like fedex, ups, estes, conway, etc... Not sure you'll have much luck from what i hear alot of companies are not even hiring in MI. Best of luck to you.

    Mi. is like fl. freight coming in not much going out.


    not likely you'll get a driving job locally without exp. why?

    insurance says who can be hired or not. not like the old days when they might throw you the keys and tell ya' to be careful.

    LTL and Construction jobs are the few that pay hourly, and are local. There is all sorts of truckin jobs local. tank, flat, end dump, etc. look everywhere. If you have 1 year, chances are still slim, but better than fresh out of school. Good Luck.

    Many Thanks for the replies so far,

    I think I should have been more specific about my quals and location!

    Currently have 18 months local driving exp with one of the "Express" outfits!! UPS or FDX, etc. I'm part time and recently hours have been cut to a level I can't pay the bills on. We do a lot of work with the bankrupt Auto ind. & it's suppliers! (Non union, btw) Drybed trailers with a hazmat, but I'm not looking to drive haz loads!! (It was a required endorsment for my current position, but I almost NEVER move haz!)

    I'm thinking of moving to SoCal, since MI seems to be circling the drain!! (I Found & got reaquainted with an Old Flame out there, I used to live in CA for about 20 years after leaving the service!)

    I need to find Local type driving jobs roughly in the L.A., Newport, San Clemete, San Diego, Anahiem or that area! but as I mentioned whenever I google, or monster or any "Job" site search for "Trucking Jobs" or "local trucking" or variations of those, all I seem to get is OTR type jobs and companies!!

    What "exactly" should I be typing into my various Web Searches to see these types of Jobs?? How does one find the local, home every night type trucking jobs,

    ..are those the less than truckload or construction type driving jobs mentioned above? Should I be searching using those terms, or is it just a matter of luck and physically walking into a local Co. that happens to be hiring? (gonna b hard to make a move and "THEN" look for a job!!!)

    I would at least like to have some prospects or at the "very" least, a good idea of what's available in the area b4 making a move like that!

    Am I just going to have to move to the area and "pop" in on "Pepsi", "Miejers", or "Bud" distribution centers and just ask if they're hiring drivers?

    I would also like to be able to look here in MI for something in that type of work, in addition to my present job, to help earn/save the funds to make the move!!

    You had the right idea in thne first place . Actually go to offices and see if they are hiring . Do you know how many people apply for jobs they see online or in response to newspaper ads ? Some companies only needing a driver or 2 don't advertise because they don't want to waste time with 100 applicants for 1 job . They don't have to wait long for a qualified applicant to just walk in .

    You can try the LTL co's but you probalby wont have much luck, we have a whole lot of drivers laid off right now and they are getting called back at a really slow rate.

    Try the beverage comapnys, (pepsi, coke, bud), they have to every stop on their route even if its to deliver a 6 pack and i havent heard much about layoffs with them.

    If you like to drive, and not work in a office or do manual labour...than I suggest you get a cargo van...and become a Courier...that's a hot business...you can earn from $500-$800 a week delivering locally in a cargo van...as a lease operator...

    You get the freedom of driving, and owning your own vehicle, without the expense of a big truck...check into it...

    :biggrin_25516:In Riverside, Ca look up Rockhard Trans, in Fontana, Dispatch Trucking, both gravel/dirt operation using bottom dumps. Robertsons is a huge cement operation with batch plants all over S. Ca. They always need redi-mix drivers and bottom dump drivers to feed their plants. Food distribution places are home nightly operations, but you do have to wheel it off into the restaurant. "C" store deliveries aren't too bad, are usually a 2 man operation that you wheel off pre-packaged containers and have the employee sign for it and then you boogie.:biggrin_25516:
