hey everyone, looking to do a bit more 'brain picking'..... what's your opinions, good or bad on ford L9ooo's for a dump truck. I'm looking at a few, prices are reasonable (quite cheap actually) and they seem to be spec'ed about the same as similar kenworth's etc, with cat 3406c power, and 13 or 15 speed trans, 18 or 20k fronts and 40 to 46k rears. Are these decent trucks, or something to be avoided?
opinions on ford L9000

They're fine for running a dump.....The key is the 3406.....
Don't get one with a 3208 or a Ford 270.....unless you like to watch grass grow....
Btw...check the cab for rust....Louisvilles are known for rusting out before the engine keels......I drove one for contractor that had holes large enough in the floorboard for me to avoid pit stops..... -
Ford trucks (now sterling) is being shut down by Daimler.
They only guarantee parts availability for Sterling/Ford for 3 more years.
The cabs are much bigger than most, very comfortable. -
good to know, thank you. I wonder if the frames are as heavy as say a western star or kenworth. The lower prices seems to sugest something might be lacking, unless people just don't consider them to be 'real' trucks. then again, seems to be a lot of sterling's out there.

There's quite a few construction companies that used the Louisvilles in CA for years.....
Both the 8000 and the 9000 series are great for dump trucks.....
The last contractor I worked for had a '88 9000 with Big Cam and they still run it....
It has won many awards in truck shows in CA and AZ...... -
No support, no dealers (nee Sterling), etc.
Keeps the price down.
LIke buying a used Oldmobile. It might be a decent car, but the value is low.
