Depends on what you do and where you go. I’ve always been a fan of Michelin XDN2’s and Hankook DL12’s on my trucks. They always did well off pavement hauling cattle and I liked how they did in the snow. Now pulling dry van the XDN2 is overkill.
The worst part of a closed shoulder tire is in mud or wet snow the centers will pack full and then you’re basically stuck. The worst part of an aggressive open shoulder tire is tire life and trying to get even wear out of them. Even the DL12 and XDN2 will start getting some abnormal wear on the edge lugs after a couple years on the truck.bzinger, Albertaflatbed, Siinman and 3 others Thank this. -
Short/heavy loads around the tundra = open

My preference, but I do plenty of job sites. I’m local and do lots of twisting. Had these 3 years and still have 14/32’s left in them. Ameri-steel D460, formerly Generals/Continental. USA manufacture.

I do site delivery in the middle of the night, aggressive open shoulder for me in the winter. Sometimes I buy closed shoulder in the summer and come winter I will groove out the shoulders.
just can't beat the extra traction of open shoulder if you need it.Vampire, Diesel Dave and mitmaks Thank this.
