Open Shoulder Tires vs Closed Shoulder Tires

    So after hearing mixed reviews... I would like to hear a majority vote.

    For mostly highway application running approximately 720 miles per day (all year round) with probably very little city work, would you go with open or closed shoulder?

    I have heard both are okay and I have heard closed shoulder is better for highway hauls.

    I would go closed for summertime highway running. Even in the winter they're okay and I've even made them work off-road... but in that case my preference is open.

    I'm for the closed shoulder as well. They're quieter, wear better, get better fuel mileage, are far more stable on any hard surface.

    Only time I'd go open is if I knew I'd be seeing mud and/or deep snow on a regular basis.

    We do enough off pavement, that I prefer open shoulder, but on mostly on pavement would change that.

    Michelin X2a isn't all that noisy on pavement,and very stable.

    This is what I'm running. But I load out in farms yards and fields so I need the traction. These are fabulous in mud.
    Certainly if I was all highway I would vote for closed shoulder.

    Tires are a compromise, and those heavy lugs don't work well everywhere. Nothing does.

    Kind of like tires and mobile track systems for off road vehicles, they fit their own niche, but are merely tolerable for use outside of that.

    As demonstrated by Caterpillar's Challenger tractors, roading is harder, although still possible.

    Challenger is selling lots of rubber tired tractors as well.
