Hi there,
I have my own transportation company (LLC), but was working for someone else for years using their DOT and MC numbers, basically I was just a driver. Now I want to start hauling cars with my own truck (still in process of buying one), but I will use the other company's DOT number and will pay them a percentage for finding me loads. But I also know that I will need to have my own MC number to operate this way. Is there a way to apply and get only MC number without getting DOT number? Or should they always go together? I was looking at fmcsa.dot.gov website and I cannot find this info there. Sorry, I am a newbie to this whole owner operator thing. Thanks
OP-1 (MC number) without USDOT number? Is that possible?

That's a new one on me. I don't think it's possible for a Motor Carrier for hire to run under someone else's DOT number. When you go to the FMCSA website, you basically answer a bunch of questions and they determine if you will need USDOT only, or if you need both USDOT and MC. Not exactly sure why you want to run under someone else's DOT number.....that is the free one. MC costs $300.

For now, I want to work with a company using their DOT and MC number. I wanted to open my own MC number just to have it for sometime before I will get loads for my own company name plus ones I have an MC I will have an access to the database to see the prices for loads. If I will have opened MC number for sometime before starting "using" it, it will give me advantage in the future. Companies don't like to give good loads to the drivers with brand new opened MC numbers.

I think I understand what you want....
By running under their DOT and MC number they get a %% of the load. You also want to have your own numbers so that you can get your own loads, correct?
You are going to need to get your own DOT and MC number.
The last thing to worry about is plates and insurance. If you have insurance through them, I am sure it will not cover you under another DOT and MC.
Last question for you is this... Why would you run under the DOT and MC of another if they can not keep you busy? -

K gonna take a stab at this--since YOU mentioned u feel u need #s to get on load board&ck rates--guessing you really wanna ck up on rates to see if they are being straight w/you in terms of what they are paying you?

The reason why I want to open MC number now rather than later is the fact that companies don't really like giving loads to a completely new owner operator with fresh MC number. And if I open MC now and get my DOT number in a year or so, they will see that my MC number has been around for awhile and will trust me more with the loads. Does that make sense? -
DriverLLC you cannot get MC now and keep it for a year because you gotta show FMSCA cargo insurance under your own company, you cannot get your own MC with cargo leased to someone else.
