I am a driver that wants to become an owner operator, I'm not sure should I go with a newer model truck or go with a older truck pre-admission. I keep hearing the newer trucks are always breaking down and I'm always hearing the older trucks are better I just want to know is there any truth to that.

In my experience, go brand new.

I have nice equipment but I would still be in the same spot with brand new equipment with equipment maintenance that has had to go into it.

Most do say, 'Buy an Older Truck' but you have to think. Eventually an Older truck gets super old! And for some Carriers (if you sign on as a Broker not running your own authority) they might limit how old the Truck can be.

Cant go old if you want to run Commiefornia.

if I was buying another truck I’d definitely get an older one . not just ore ELD
I’d get pre computer. I’d get one with a mechanical injection pump and zero computers.

yes it will use more fuel. the computers save fuel , and an older truck will be less aerodynamic.

But the total operating costs will work out about the same since you won’t have any computer related breakdowns and repairs.

but it’s hard to finance older trucks , and hard to finance the repairs you will need to make to the truck before you start driving it.

Two things you need to worry about to be a successful O/O. 1. keeping a driver in the seat and keep that truck moving. You are the driver so that should no be an issue. 2. Keeping your truck out of the shop. Aftertreatment issues make up about 75% of all mechanical headaches.. However they are getting better. Stay 2016 or newer. Try and avoid years 2009-2015 (earlier learning years of new emissions) 2008 or older your truck will have a lot of other mechanical issiues that come with age. The best way to manage that is having good mechanics to get you in and out of the shop as cheap/fast as possible. www.truckingse.com is good for finding shops anywhere in the country.

    Myself,

I'd rather deal with old truck problems than new truck problems. Just my .02
