I have one of these radios, it's about 20 years old so it's the good one made in the Philippines not in China. I was told I can double the output power by adjusting a pot inside the radio. Is it really that simple? I think it's like L6 or something, the one with the wax on it.

Long story short-- that's a bad idea. Others will chime in with details as to why.

Turning up a potentiometer without specialized skills and a carefully calibrated bench of equipment (spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope--not just a meter) will hinder your TX/RX range, audio quality, and longevity of your otherwise great Cobra.

The 510/520 do pretty good out of the box with the stock mic.

    Blaskowitz and BTShepp Thank this.

EDIT: I put cobra. I meant uniden. Usually people mean Cobra when they say Philippines.

    Blaskowitz Thanks this.

I've installed a bunch of the new pro520's in our plow trucks and equipment and they work great right out of the box with a tuned k30 magmount antenna.

I just got off a road trip with a Uniden 520 and a K30. The combo works very well.

I have gravitated to such radios with the simplest design that allow me to adjust the controls without looking since I keep in on Channel 19 at all times anyway.

Like a blind guy using touch, I know from left to right are the volume, squelch, and RF controls. The fewer knobs, the better for me especially in heavy traffic that keeps my eyes on the road and not on the radio. In fact, due to space limitations in a small sedan, the radio is actually behind me, but I can reach back and "feel" the adjustments as needed.

Getting the antenna setup right is the biggest improvement you can make to any radio.
