Old Truck Stop Photo's

Thats it Tooleys.. Had a little dinner and a muddy parking lot ..and if I remember right trucks just park any old way.. I ran into NY a lot in the mid 60's I used to haul produce from all over the US and then from 66-68 I ran FL every week and tomatoes from Homestead FL back to NY city in season..Thanks for that..

Jacks Truck Stop - Columbus, MS- US82 East of the little scale hut?

Brit Chism's Truck Stop-Shannon, MS- Jct of US45/Alt 45
His brother Doyle Chism had one a Centerville, AL on US82.

Bill Kiefers Truck Stop- 1st N of Tupelo, left side of US 45 northbound,
then moved to below Verona, MS -US 45 south bound.

Shacks #19- Jct of 19-29 at near Crystal River FL
or just before scale house at the Swaunee River in FL.

Sheriff's Western Texaco on US 80, just west of Las Cruces, NM.

A big Chevron stop in Colton, CA as you came down from Whitewater
and hit the San Bernadino Freeway.

Art and Dots Truck Stop, Horse Cave, KY - Right hand side of US 31.Small
diner type, off road up a driveway, park and look down on the highway.
About 5 rigs (SA's and 32/34" trailers was it's size.

(Strange we did not seem to have any trouble getting in and out
there or at Tooleys in JC- Find space and get in it.)

Believe the Triple T at Tuscon, AZ had been mentioned. Was my way
station on Columbus, MS to SD, LA, or SF, CA runs in 58. Left laundry,
go CA, pick up on way back. Oil changes when mileage came up in
that area. Lot was gravel and a friendly lady driving a Blue and White Olds
88 had a trailer under the shade tree kinda back out on north side.

 

The Smithsonian Institute has an aerial photograph of the old truckstop at the intersection of I-10 and Airway Blvd in El Paso, TX taken sometime in the late 1960's in its "History of Transportation" section.

I also remember the old truckstop that was located just north of the Anthony, NM P.O.E on I-10 on the frontage road which was at one time old US80.

Anyone recall the name of either truckstop?

 

Lord have mercy I haven't heard the Evergreen mentioned in a lifetime. Brings back floods of memories.

Remember the Chevron in Colton,it seems there was a big Chevron in El Paso also.

My mom and dad owned Dot and Brit Chism's Truck Stop in Shannon, Mississippi waaaaay back in the 1950-60s. Does anyone remember the place on Highway 45...? bstrchiz@gmail.com

My parents owned a truck stop in Shannon, Mississippi. Dot and Brit Chism's Truck Stop Restaurant. It had a neon sign you could see for miles up and down Highway 45. The sign had a picture of a truck and the wheels seemed to move around and the red truck "stop" sign blinked on and off. There was a big neon arrow that pointed to the restaurant, and the entire top of the building was outlined in neon lights. It was open 24/7. Yes! Brit and Dot Chism were my parents. I was one of the rugrats helping out behind the counter and back in the kitchen. Doyle and Norma Chism were my dad's brother and his wife. They had the one in Centerville, Alabama for many years. Also had controlling interest at one time in two truckstops in Shannon. Bill and Dot Keifer were at times friends and later business associates of my parents. I'm not sure if "Jack" in Columbus is the same fellow that eventually took over the truckstop on Hiway 45 south (south of the "Y" split) but it became Nona's and Jack's Truck Stop in the early 70s after the Chisms moved to Carriere/Picayune on Interstate 59.

Does anyone remember the old Bordentown truck plaza or the Sandman? they where both off exit 7 NJTNPK and 130 in Jersey. The sandman was i tight little place had a bar and poolhall. the boardentown right down the street, big gravel lot home town dinner, had pump attendents washed windows and checked your oil. free dinner with a fillup. i still miss the hotel rooms in the old 76 ts it was cheap and a decent place to lay your head for the night. there use to be some great silver bullet dinners in Jersey that had truck parking and great food now you cant even get off the road to any of them
