This is a question for the old timers..

What has changed within the trucking industry between the 70's and today? Is the industry better today?

    Thanks!

Oh, hell we could write a novel on that subject. Some things are better some are worse. But would have to say it’s all subjective. Overall society has gotten worse.

I guess I qualify as an old timer. Over fifty years in this business has given me some perspective.
    What's changed? Almost everything.
Are the changes for the better? For the most part yes.
However, the things that have changed for the worse are evident every day and have more direct effect on the drivers.

ducnut, Cattleman84, Oxbow and 2 others Thank this.

No problem, I'll just delete your post and we'll pretend you never wrote it. Certainly wouldn't want you to feel all insulted and everything.

Deregularation act of the industry 1980

The act substantially reduced Government control of the trucking industry, making it easier for new carriers to enter the industry, eliminating certain restrictions placed on regulated carriers, and encouraging greater price competition among carriers.

According to National Transportation Institute data, driver wages in 1980 hovered between $38,000 – $39,000. That's $131,000 in today's dollars! In contrast, today's trucker's earnings average out to less than half of that. Wage growth has lagged well behind inflation when it comes to trucking jobs
