I'm an OTR driver w/ less than 2 years experience. Finally got routed through the Bakken. I saw a lot of diesel dually pickups running trailer loads in a hurry. Are these all private contractors for the oil companies? Are they the same names that run the big trucks? I'm wondering if I should try to get on with one of them rather than aim for a big rig sand or water or oil hauler. It's all about feeding my family right now.

Not sure about the Bakken, but around TX/LA/OK most of the oilfield hotshots are O/O's leased to companies that specialize in oilfield tucking - Acme, etc. Unless you're wanting to buy a hotshot truck to lease on with somebody, you'll probably find it easier to find a job driving a class 8.

If you're really interested in the hotshots as a driver, you might just have to look at the names on the trucks and make some calls. Or talk to drivers at the fuel stops. You might find a contractor that has multiple units that is looking for somebody.
