I have a 2001 6NZ CAT set at 550. My oil temp stays at 200 unless I get into a hard pull. It will rise as high as 215 to 220. My water temp rus about 185. Engine runs strong, 6.2 mpg and no complaints. I'm told it's running to hot, and I should change my oil cooler. I change the oil every 12000 miles with Shell Rotella, and Lucas. Anybody have any insight, or history with this engine temp? Any help would be appreciated.
Oil temp too high?

Low 200's is normal oil temp range. Engine oil actually MUST get over 212ish otherwise it builds up too must moisture from condensation. The more humid the climate the more important it is.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Those temps are fine on a hard pull. Hell my ISX runs 210-220 just normally and Ive seen almost 250 on a LONG HARD pull in the summer with outside temps pushing 100.

I appreciate the feedback. I was just concerned, because I have two friends with the same engine, but their oil temp are running in the 165 to 175 range. I did a little research, and found the newer engines run at higher temps, but wasn't sure if mine fell into the category of newer.

I used to drive a company truck with a 6nz. It's oil temp always ran around 180-190. Big pull 220-230.
Now I have a newer truck with 2015 isx. Flat roads oil is 220 or so, big pull 235-240. -
S M D Thanks this.

The hotter it gets the better it will run. To a point.
