Hello, I recently had an oil sample done on my oil right before it got changed . Here are the results , as you can guess I’m pretty worried about a head gasket leak. This engine only has 400,000 miles since literally built brand new by a shop up in Canada . ISX CUMMINS . Last 6 of the vin 886439 It’s in My 2006 Peterbilt 379 .
“MORE SAMPLE HISTORY NEEDED TO ESTABLISH A NORMAL WEAR TREND. SODIUM AND POTASSIUM HIGHER THAN NORMAL WITH A POSITIVE ANTIFREEZE REACTION NOTED. OXIDATION IS A SIGN OF OVERHEATING, A CHANGE IN OIL BRANDS, AGE AND/OR EXTENDED SERVICE. LEAD APPEARS ELEVATED. VISCOSITY IS IN THE 50 WEIGHT RANGE. ELEVATED OXIDATION CAN INCREASE THE VISCOSITY AND THIS CAN CAUSE FAILURE DUE TO OIL STARVATION (LOW OIL FLOW). MONITOR ANY COOLANT LOSS. CHECK COOLING SYSTEM FOR OIL. OIL AND FILTER CHANGE NOTED. AFTER INSPECTION AND ANY NECESSARY REPAIRS, RESAMPLE AT HALF THE REGULAR SAMPLING INTERVAL TO VERIFY COOLANT LEAK NO LONGER EXISTS.”
Can someone that’s familiar with oil sampling tell me how bad it looks? .
thank you very much in advance .

I'd do as they recommend. Run it a while and send in another sample between oil changes. No sense going down a rabbit hole if it was just a bad sample.

Sodium and Potassium numbers are through the roof - wear metals are ok.
Oxidation and viscosity look within range.
Are you topping up coolant frequently?Rideandrepair and Bebecksingh Thank this. -
Here’s the last 4 or 5 samples from mine - just to help you compare ‘normal’ levels.

If you have a 06 truck, you will have an EGR engine. EGR coolers are a frequent fail item. EGR coolers are also rarely replaced during rebuild. Oil coolers are also another likely cause of the cross contamination and again, not normally replaced in regular rebuilds. Like mentioned, if your engine has a coolant consumption problem you will notice you will have to top up the coolant from time to time. So are you adding? Keep an eye on your coolant level and certainly test again.
