I have a NXS Acert that is leaking oil between the head and the block, the last oil change the engine went thru 2 gallons of oil in 10,000 miles, it is not leaking that much out, so I would assume that it is burning it, no oil in coolant or evidence of it in fuel. This engine only used to go thru 1/2 a gallon every 10,000 miles. What are the possibilities of where the oil is coming from?
Edit: it's leaking on the driver side.

My mechanic told me its the gap between the head and block. Some have imperfections to let oil seep out while under pressure And heat.
He told me a fix. Is clean off the block and head along that area. Goto the auto store look for hi-temp clear coat . rough the area a bit so clearcoat will stick. He said apply many coats to block, head and gasket between. Its a common issue he said with the back part of head and block on cat motors.
This summer I am going to do this when its warmer. -
Is your mechanic referring to clearcoat paint or rtv / silcone?
If you've ever had the head off a large cat motor, there isn't any imperfections on top of the block or bottom of the head.
I can't beleive this is a common issue with cat motors but cat mechanics please shime in here.EverLuc Thanks this. -
Now the common problem with the cat motors is the they leak behind the timing case near the top and back of the head, causing oil to go around the top of the block, seeming like it's leaking between the head and block. Sometimes this oil will also go down the front giving the impression it's coming out from behind the fan clutch.
If it seems to come out the back of the head, check the riser cover gasket. They tend to crack in the back corner.tommygun58 and EverLuc Thank this. -
I've always had a little oil in the back left corner between the block and head above the ecm. It did it before and after a head change and we used a new spacer plate. It's been mentioned on here before that it's a pretty common leak.

As others stated above. Probably an internal leak that wanders. -
if I only lost 1 gal in 10,000 miles, I would not even look for the leak.

Now adding a quart every other day. Now that's some oil

Common leak!! Oil weeps between the block and spacer plate gasket. Permanent fix is to coat the spacer plate gasket with a sealant before assembly. There is a thread on here that has the caterpillar bulletin for the whole procedure.

You have to find exactly were it is leaking, and repair it.
Cat on the early "E" use to have us glue the head, rear housing, and front cover on it did absolutly nothing.
The front cover is a week spot as the gasket and housing is a poor design.
If it is under warrenty get it fixed do not except a patch job.
Just a thought!
