Oil in CAC and ducts

    The truck I share with the day driver, just blew off the hotside turbo ducts. Oil was found in them, and no doubt the CAC, and likely the coldside as well.
    This is an '08 Western Star, with the C-15 Cat. The day driver told me there should be no oil in those places. I'm not so sure given the year of the truck.
    My little Ford Powerstroke, get's oil in the same places as the big truck, due to the crankcase vent being plumbed into the intake side of the turbo. I'm suspecting it's the same case with this newer Cat. I know the ones previous dumped below the engine, but with the latest greatest antipollution stuff, I'm thinking it dumps into the intake side of the turbo as well. Am I right? The truck is 35 miles away, or I'd look myself.:biggrin_25521:

    If its venting into the intake you will find some oil in there unless there's a crankcase filter to skim out the oil in between the crankcase and intake. FWIW VW TDI's had problems with oil from the crankcase vent mixing with soot from the egr gas and coating the intake with a black oily mess, resulting in the intake eventually plugging up. Its not as severe now thanks to ULSD and less volatile synthetic oils.

    I don't know if there's a filter in there or not. The truck only has 190k on it. Would it be a possibility the filter needs to be changed? How does this work, something on the lines of a cyclone separator?
    Wow, that sounds pretty nasty on the VW, a mess to be sure!:biggrin_2556:

    The newer engines do have a filter to catch and return oil to the crankcase on the crankcase venting system. It doesn't return the oil to the air intake to burn it. If the engine would burn excessive oil blow by then the DPF will plug quickly.

    You more than likely have a bad shaft seal on one of the turbochargers allowing oil pressure to enter the air intake system.
