For you drivers familiar with Ohio's CDL permit and endorsements, I have this question:

I completed all my tests, including Tanker and Hazmat. I went to the BMV and picked up my larners permit. On it was listed the Tanker endorsement, but not the Hazmat. I asked the rep why the HAzmat was not on there. She stated, "it is in the system though." I replied, "if it is in the system, why isn't the endorsement listed on the permit card?"

She then asked another bureau rep who stated "the Hazmat endorsement won't actually show up until I obtain my CDL A license." Why would my Tanker, but not the Hazmat? Hmm...I called the test location and they confirmed that they put it in the system as soon as I closed out the testing, but couldn't substantiate what the BMV rep said at the office. What do you (Ohio) drivers think about this? Maybe it doesn't because I have to have a background check done before receiving the Hazmat? In Ohio, we don't have to do the background check before taking the Hazmat permit test. I've had to be fingerprinted 3 times in the last year for Nursing related employment and Ohio and NC nursing license. Next will be done for the endorsement! The FBI is going to start wondering "who is this Don H. fellow we keep getting requests for"? Haha

tankers do not necessarily represent a hazmat load...milk, water for example.....once you get your license and the background check, you should be good to go...

frankly, i am quite surprised you even got to take the hazmat test...out here, you MUST have the background check FIRST....!!! then the test....BUT you also NEED the CDL license as well before you can take the hazmat test......again, why oh-hi-oh does it that way is beyond me...

I was surprised also about being able to take the permit test. Speaking of the actual Hazmat test, I thought it would be the most difficult of the five, but found it easier than the air brakes test. Just imagine a driver with poor air brake knowledge driving a tanker or hazmat load! :biggrin_25524:

Dont stress it. What I would suggest is study at home. read through the book a couple times. Got to the counter and tell the person what tests you want to take that day. But tell them you want to study in between each test. You will be allowed to do so. This way , you will have that tests info fresh in your mind.

Its multiple choice and much of it is common sense type stuff. BUT they throw seem other reasonable answers in there too. I went through this process twice. First time didnt go past having my temps. couldnt get hired with th epoints I had on my DL. Second time , I did what I described above. I am now waiting to go take final Skills testing with my NEW EMPLOYER!!!!
