I went the IPD way a year and 100k miles a go, 3406E, did it my self, I'm a O/O not a mechanic.

Thanks for the response. Years ago I would say cat only, now not sure there stuff is worth the extra money.

No first hand experience but I've asked this same question on other forums and it seems that IPD makes a decent kit. I will likely be going that way on my hobby truck unless my company discount on Cat parts is comparable to IPD.
@superhauler @SmokinCATpeterbilt_2005 and Oxbow Thank this. -
On another thread they used ipd and had problems with oil consumption, but was said ipd had better rings now. The old truck runs good just uses oil and has blowby, didn't want to waste my time and money rebuilding and not improve it.

Fp Diesel by Federal Mogul is what I used. Brand new Mahle Pistons. If you are not familiar with Mahle, they make most of the OEM pistons.
Now that being said, I cannot tell you longevity or anything as I am rebuilding mine again after 4 months cause the mechanic didn't cut the counter bores with a 10 thou dip on the flange. I can tell you they still look brand new but after only 4 to 6 months.... I would expect that.SAR and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
I have two different o/o friends that had their 3406 e rebuilt, (complete inframe with cat parts) at two different dealerships for big money and neither truck ran 6 months before head gaskets began leaking. Both places said liner projection was good. Then they were charged a lot more money to repair them the second time! Will be doing mine myself no matter how long it takes, may have to buy a counterbore cutter but probably still cheaper in the long run. Yes mahle builds a very good piston for many applications but liner projection has to be in specs or they wont last. Am also concerned about head gasket quality in these aftermarket kits.
Hawk6275 and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
I have used PAI, IPD in several. I can't stress enough how important liner protrusion is. Head bolt torque, holes being clean and properly lubed is just as important. CAT parts are not what they use to be for sure. I have heard of missing or broke rings on the pistons. Since they come loaded most don't check. I will say I have never found anything like that.
Quality parts and attention to detail on installation is key for an overhaul to last. -
If your doing a kit I believe there’s a big difference in the warranty between the 2 companies.
Ipd is 12 months only, Cat will sell you up to 4 years I believe.Last edited: Sep 16, 2018

IPD warranty is 2 year unlimited mileage for on-highway engines.
