I’m looking to buy a truck and start doing intermodal work but I have absolutely no idea where to start besides the obvious part of getting a truck. I’m in the memphis area so railyards are not a problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

You should wonder why these intermodal companies can't keep owner operators.

I’d really like to dispatch myself but I don’t know if that’s even feasible

You’re better off leasing on to a carrier, to start out at least. Intermodal can be……. Interesting to say the least. But you can get home pretty much everyday if you want and if you’re willing to do more “work” than just sitting in the seat all day…. Like doing yard pulls or multiple short runs, and many many drop and hooks, you can clear usually around $4000.00 a week after fuel and deductions

You should totally do it. Tons of money in pulling cans. Get yourself the most expensive truck you can afford too.

    This is the best advice

I’d actually work as a driver for one of the many many companies that drag the crappy shipping containers around for the railroads

I think after a few weeks doing that it’s quite possible you may decide that it’s not worth the hassle

the chassis the containers are on , are total total garbage and junk , they still use bias ply recap tires that are garbage and blow out a lot and the railroads usually blame the driver or company and demand that they pay for the garbage tire to be replaced

pay close attention to the next few containers you see going down the road
You will hear them rattling and squeaking and on most of them you can actually see the wheels wobbling

the lights never work the brakes don’t work half the time , etc
And guess who gets the blame for that if you get a roadside inspection ?

I work for fedex freight now so I have a little experience with containers and they definitely are raggedy garbage and I honestly don’t care much for them at all but that’s really the only thing I could do as an O/O and not have to do otr runs

    You could look into hoppers.
    Not bad around Memphis/Byhalia area.
PT brokers you can see about using one of their trailers til you get one, they’re outta Cleveland MS.
They haul a lot in ton Byhalia Cargill from IN.
Load out goes to Evansville IN reload Mt Vernon In to Byhalia.
Or Bay AR to Mt Pleasant TX reload chicken meal to emporia KS reload Kansas City to Ravenden springs AR(pretty much Pocahontas AR about 8 miles in middle of nowhere)
    Home - PT Corporation

You send paperwork in through app by noon Wednesday and they’ll direct deposit your money on Friday morning

I didn’t know they did that! I live about 10 minutes from cargill and that doesn’t sound like a bad deal. I thought about looking into hauling fertilizer off presidents island but didn’t know where to start with that either
