Hello all, I'm doing research for my business plan in regards to purchasing my own truck and flatbed trailer and hauling for a for a company out of IL that mainly does steel coil. Currently, they pay 80 to 82 percent of what they bill the client which averages out to 5500-6500 a week with the most successful drivers being out for 2 weeks at a time.
Does anyone have experience that can corroborate these figures?
I've always heard that if it seems to good to be true, it may be...but I also know that there is money to be made in owning and steel dependant on MANY factors. I'd like to throw out those factors as this thread continues.
Thanks.

how much do they pay per mile?
-
It's not CPM based, its percentage based, but I think it's around 2.61 a mile loaded and 2.32 unloaded.

Thats low imo, you should be getting more than that, especially for heavy steel coil loads.

$2.16 a mile doesn’t make you $6500 to $7000 a week hauling / waiting on coils.
$7k a week seems unlikely every week in the coil business. Steel is very competitive up here.#KYTRUCKER, Vampire, whoopNride and 1 other person Thank this. -
What do you think an O/O should be making? Do you haul steel coil? How much do you make?
Thanks! -

I run mostly loadboard freight out of Chicago so it dose include some steel.
Nothing wrong with $2 mile but that doesn’t get you to that gross figure.
Every body and there little cousins have trucks and beat up flatbeds up here hauling coils.
I’m just over $3 all miles on about 55k miles so far this year. That still dose NOT get you $6500 to $7000 a week.Vampire, whoopNride, Dino soar and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks! the company is Carrier One out of Alsip, IL. And apologies, I didn't quote the guy correctly, here's what he said.
"Can’t say enough about how great this company is. People that are leaving bad reviews are probably guys that suck at running their own business in general or have no clue how the flatbed market works. I average $6467 a week gross $2.61/loaded mile $2.32/empty mile at an 11.4% deadhead, these numbers are ytd as of 2/28/18. These numbers were achieved during the traditionally slow time in the freight markets. And yes I go home too. If you can’t be successful here it’s because of something your doing not carrier one"Last edited: Aug 8, 2018
