It's been years since I've been to the city. Last time I went I worked for a large company that payed all the tolls and told me which route to take.

Now I pay the tolls so I avoid all possible. Now I have a load going to Long Island next week. Is there any way to miss all the tolls in a big truck? If not what is the cheapest way in and out. I also remember the signs lying to me up there. Somewhere a sign said 11'6" and I saw lots of trucks keep going so I got on the cb. I was told that was just for the left lane to keep right. Is it still like that in some places?

Haven't been to "the city" in awhile, but the GW is a toll one way and free the opposite way. Can't remember which way is a toll. You need to find out which are free etc. Someone will chime in I'm sure. The low overpasses are a PITA, for sure, but are mostly incorrect, but that does't give you any assurance. I was thinking the bridge onto Staten Island is free, but not sure. Call the consignee and get directions in for starters.

not many free tolls going to that area, but the gw is free going south, and a toll going north, im not sure the cost, but i think its in the area of $30 +/-
they have ez-pass/ which is used in pa,nj,del,md,ny,ct,mass,ri and now OHIO takes ez-pass starting today!
ur tolls would prob be free leaving. call ny toll commissionl, surely they can tell you..

Going into the city is going to cost you from the west and south! You'll pay more in fuel trying to go into CT and the little tolls that way as you will the $40 across the GW. If you are going onto Long Island go across the otter bridge on Hwy 440 which is what I287 EB turns into at The NJTP. Take that up to I287 and across Brooklyn to I495 onto the Island. Coming back out is where you'll get to have fun! If you go back out the same route it costs more and if you have a 53' trailer you don't "want" to go down and cross into Manhatten and back up 3rd ave to I87 and out. If you come and go across the Thongs neck, Whitestone or Triboro you will pay something like $30 (they upped it about a year ago and I don't know to what exactly) but that will be it for the high dollar tolls untill you hit the NJTP. Remember ALL routes back into PA EXCEPT for I95 (north of Trenton) you have to pay the NJ excape tax of about $19 LOL. There is a $5 or $7 going north of NYC on I95 and thats the last till you get up north at Boston.

There's a ferry that goes north from long island to CT for about $150 if you're feeling adventurous.

Last time I was there I came in from Albany. Had to deliver to a reciever next to the airport, then last stop was in Linden NJ.
Total toll cost that day was aroud 200 bucks. I was not a happy camper, but I had the cash on me because I was warned. Just took a little longer at a few tolls because they did not like 50s

This is what I always did. I would take the Outterbridge or the Goethals to the Verrazano on my way in. You only pay the Verrazano on the way from Brooklyn to Staten Island - there is no toll from Staten Island to Brooklyn. On the way out you pay for either the Whitestone or Throgs Neck but the GW is free heading from NY into NJ.

Even though I was coming from I80, if I was heading anywhere but the Bronx first I always came in from the south. From I80 I would either take 280 or 287-24-78 and drop down the Jersey Pike an exit or two and cross the Goethals. It was a lot easier and saved money.

I was just over there this weekend in my vehicle and would take the Whitestone instead of the Throgs Neck to get back up to the Bronx if you're heading that way to leave. There were lane closures on the Throgs neck and the Cross Parkway right at 295 which also backed up 295 because of the merge. It was bad even at noon on a Sunday so I'd hate to see that durung the week.

Yeah, I forgot to add this: Go in with at least $150-$200 dollars or more in your wallet! Keep 2 $10 bills in your shirt pocket for those guys who will jump on your running board to give you directions if you even LOOK like you're lost (Now there's another thread if I ever saw one! LOL) and you weren't smart enough to BUY a NYC fold out paper map! NOT a plastic "Quick Map" before you adventured into that city! The map in your Rand McNalley is the most useless thing to even think about using! $4.95 at a truck stop and keep the tax deductible receipt!

It used to be you could do an in and out for about $100 but since the tolls went up and there are people (shippers who have NO idea how to dispatch and load a NYC multi drop) take the cash! Unless you have a prepaid toll pass! It's a pain trying to find anyone who will cash a Com Check inside of the GW and Long Island and finding an ATM is even harder in a truck. There are only 2 "truck stops" that I know of both off of the BQE and calling them "truck stops" is stretching the matter! That's where you have to get a MTA pass and take a bus or subway to find one! The cheapest card is $10!

And continuing the 1st paragraph: If you are given directions IN what were you given to get OUT? One one way street and you're on another adventure! And those signs telling you to get off due to height especially the one EB on the BQE at exit 27 Atlantic! Oh how many times I've seen the brake lights come on and an indecisive turn to the ramp, Me yelling at them on the CB not to make the turn but to no avail as they either didn't have one or it was off! I've been down Atlantic (Exit 27) and it's no picnic for a truck as people will double park right in front of your butt, look at you as they walk away from the car! And that Rand tells you NOTHING! BUY A STREET MAP FOR NYC! There are several places where you will see signs directing trucks off of the interstates that should not be there after the construction and if you do follow the signs as soon as you get off, thats as far as any directions go. No arrows or any help for you but your own devices! BUY THE MAP!

Oh, when you come up to Atlantic Ave going EB on the BQE (I 278 ) get in the center lane and STAY there! Heck, as soon as you get on I278 (actually ANY interstate through NYC) stay in the center lane as much as possible! When you pass Exit 27 and go under the overhead look up at the roof on the right and see where the trailers got eaten down on the curve in the roof!
