$55k isn't enough; you can make much more.
Where are you in New York?
Will you use your GI Bill benefits for school?

Do you want OTR or regional or local?
I'm assuming you want OTR since you want to take the pooch with you.
If you want companies that use the"VA Military Apprenticeship Program", look at these:
Schneider Bulk - tankers (not sure about pet, call and ask)
    Melton Truck Lines
    CFI - www.cfidrive.com
    Jim Palmer Trucking
    Transport America
    there's a few more.

Google or Bing for nearest 160 hr. cdl school, then call the companies you're interested in and ask if they hire from that school. All those on that list probably will. Jim Palmer and CFI have their own inhouse cdl school and CFI also hires from private 160 hr. cdl schools.

If you're willing to travel to Memphis, tn then check out Werner. I did it, free and no contract. 2 week school. They pay for your physical at a place near your home, you are responsible for obtaining your permit, then you can take the crackhound or drive. If you drive, they will reimburse you for travel for the exact cost of the bus ticket round trip. From savannah ga to Memphis I got a 345 dollar check. Not bad. It however is a automatic only. Not a recuiter for them, but I do work for them. If you want more info, pm me an I'd be happy to answer any questions.
