Seems like drivers call the lanes differently.

You hear a driver call out that the number 3 lane is blocked on a 4+ lane highway, then they argue about which is the # 3 lane.... the 3rd from the left or 3rd from the right.

What do you call the number 1 lane? Far left (hammer lane) or far right (granny lane)?

I would assume that if referred to by number then 1 would be far left and count to the right from there as we are to read and whatnot all from left to right, but that's just me.

Showing my age here, but to me the far left lane has always been The Monfort Lane, that's how everyone referred to it when I was growing up. Those guys moved at warp speed.

Officials (police, EMT, fire, etc) always start numbering from the furthest travel lane to the LEFT, as number 1. As long as it's a normal travel lane and has a solid yellow line next to it, it begins as number one then get higher as you move right. (Even an HOV or toll lane counts and would be No 1 as long as it's designated for normal high speed traffic)

    Also,
"inside lane" SHOULD mean the lane nearest the center median.
"outside lane" SHOULD mean the lane nearest the right shoulder.
"Middle lane" should be used to refer to the #2 lane of a 3 lane road.

    Steel Dragon Thanks this.

This is why there I've given up on relying on "driver reports" to try and identify where a stalled or crashed vehicle might exist in the roadway ahead

Slow lane, sandwich lane, fast lane and really fast lane. I think the number one lane is whatever lane you ate in when a dipship gives you the number one salute.

I usually travel the center lanes now that I'm in a 68 Mph truck!
I usually follow the other truckers...if everyone is in the other lane... most likely there is a reason...

    Just passing by Thanks this.
