I have a 1981 peterbilt 362 with a 400cummins in it. My turbo is bad. I'm curious what turbo I should put on it. I've been told and hx60 or 80 would make it pay attention. Some input would be nice thanks guys.

Neither of the turbos you mentioned are direct fit, they won’t even bolt to your manifold, not to mention even spinning a turbo the size of an HX80.
A good upgrade for a stock engine is a 3804502 HT60, used on N14s.
Look for the holset version only.
The compressor outlet is for a v-band, all I have seen switch take a grinder to the outer part of the flange to leave just a little ridge to slip the hose over.snowman_w900, OLDSKOOLERnWV, Diesel Dave and 4 others Thank this. -
If it still has the log style manifold it came with it is time to update that as well.
Diesel Dave and Oxbow Thank this. -
I was thinking the n14 turbo. They are pretty long lived and take some good boost pressure. Some guy put those n14 turbo on a s60 detroit.

Running a HT60 on my Big Cam, seems to do a good job. Pump calibrated for a 625 CPL, plus a little over stock

The old log type was replaced by the pulse type many years ago. They were a great improvement. Don't know about much after that. Some folks matched ports, grind so the flanges are the same on both mating services. Seems extreme unless it is a pulling truck or such.
Go back a few posts to SmokinCAT. That is your turbo.
I know there are some aftermarket manifolds out there that look really cool. Don't know if they flow all that much better. For the money I thank you would get a better return on the investment with a Cat radiator and air to air cooler.spsauerland Thanks this. -
I have an ht60 turbo 3804502 on a stock BC3 400 cpl531. My boost gauge shows 32psi max with 158psi fuel pressure. I think it pulls like a 400hp engine but not any better. The engine starts great in cool weather and doesnt smoke after it's up to temp either. Exhaust temp can get up to 800 or 850 max if I lug it too much. If I drive normal it doesnt go much above 750. This is on the cold side of the turbo. Is there such a thing as too much boost?
