Hey everyone, I just got enrolled for truck driving school at Northwest Mississippi Community College.
I'll start off with the basics:
$1125 tuition, $64 for 2 books
8 weeks of school, 5 days a week, 240 hours according to the NWCC website
Requirements: Same thing you need for any other trucking school.... DOT physical and drug test, commercial truck learner's permit, etc.
This is the cheapest tuition for CDL school I have ever heard of. It's also the longest CDL school I have ever heard of. Go figure. And the maximum number of people allowed per class is 6.
I plan on taking pictures and hopefully videos of certain parts of the driving school. I'll keep you posted.

Get your endorsements while you're there, mainly tanker/hazmat & TWIC. If you want Canada runs you need a passport.
A good company in MS that hires newbies is Howard Transportation.
With that 240 hour course, you should be able to land an excellent job, especially with all the endorsements.ZEBOV Thanks this. -
Ok, I'm really bored. School starts Monday.
School supplies needed: spiral-bound notebook and a pen or pencil. -
WOW! This place is cool! And the trainer is cool too!
On the 1st day of school, we took a look at the trucks: a 2011 Freightliner Cascadia, some 2005 Mack truck, and a 1990ish cabover truck. The Mack and cabover have incredibly low miles, the cabover having almost 27,000. We also took a look at the rest of the vocational school, which has a welding and aircraft mechanic school. One of the airplanes there was donated to the school by the DEA. There are absolutely no ladies in this building. LOL. It doesn't surprise me.
On the 2nd day of school, we met Tom from Howard Transportation. Not many people here on the forum know much about them (and their website badly needs to be updated), but that is one company that has my attention. They're in Ellisville, MS. They accept students from approved schools, mine being one of them. By the way, Tom will come over several times, and he always brings donuts for everyone. (I should probably start working out if I'm going to haul flatbeds.)
Yesterday and today we've been going over HoS.... heavily! At the end of the day today, we took a ride in the Cascadia.
When the students drive, we won't just be going around the parking lot or around the block or even just around town. We'll be driving to places like Corinth, MS, into Alabama, probably around Selmer, TN, Oxford, MS, etc.
The books are J.J. Keller & Associates' "Hours of Service and Driver Logs Workbook" which has the newest HoS changes, and the 4th edition of "Delmar's Tractor-trailer Truck Driver Training" by Alice Adams.
That's all I have for now. I meant it when I said I would keep you all updated. -
I went to Corinth, MS on Thursday. There are 5 students, including me, and we each drove with a 48' dryvan trailer for 25 to 30 miles.
The instructor is a good dude. Seriously. -
Any updates yet?

Well how is it going?

Great! Absolutely wonderful! We all got out CDL's Monday, and we're now on the 8th week. The instructor is also a third party examiner, so you can use the school's Freightliner Cascadia for the test.
The fact that the school is 8 weeks long is great. There's a lot of repetition, but that helps us learn everything.fr8te_sh8ker Thanks this. -
Did they have companies come to the class or a list of companies to apply at?
