I hadn't seen this forum section and should have posted here orginally:
I was curious if any drivers who regularly use this route know anything about the follwing exits as far as VERY cheap flea bag motels ($40 or less) or diners.
I know it sounds weird but I am especially interested in old 50's diners and hotels with those old looking antique neon signs from the 50's and 60's and with CHEAP rates.

Pack your gun, watch out for the ladies, and go to Lowman's Motor Court in Hickory. It is everything you asked for. The Fran Marr is just down the street.
Get off at exit 123, go to US 70, take a left (west). The Fran Marr is about three miles on the right, Lowman's is about a mile farther on the left, sort of down in the woods. -
Thank you SO very much. This is exactly the kind of advice I hoped for one here and was begining to think I woulnd't get it.
I actually AM a lady, but I will be traveling with a man. I have already noted these two places in my trip planning book. Is there a difference between the two? -

Lowman's is an old Motor court from the 40's at least. It is mostly long term rentals now, but I think they still rent rooms for the night. For years they were know for their hourly room rental, although I don't know if that still applies or not.
The place has been freshened up in the last few years. It sits off the road surrounded by trees.
Lowman's is listed in the phone book as Lowman's Motor Court. The Fran Mar is listed as Fran Mar Motel.
Lowman's certainly is a page from the past, and has a lot of character. You may even live to tell about it.
If you are going to the mountains, there are some very old but clean motor courts off of US 221 close to Linville, and another off 226-A in Little Switzerland. -
Thank you for all your awesome advice, stranger. I have checked every lead you gave me or added it to my list to check on later for our trip.
Is it funny or scary that my Google search on the Lowman's place only turned up results of some man getting robbed of $600 bucks by some locals? I am assumning that doesn't happen every single day there and have added it to my itenerary.
As far as all this talk of country ladies - I am from Tennessee and can handle all that! Hee hee hee.
Any more advice on hotels farther down like Burgaw or Goldsboro - headed down NC towards Myrtle Beach?
