So I am posting this for my dad who is currently broken down in Wisconsin because the brand new air compressor that was installed on his truck 5 hours ago after the previous failed, has also failed! It no longer is building air. The governor and air dryer were also replaced. His words " I instal air compressor and after about five hours air pressure was driving down to 90 then 70 then 30 and now I cannot build up anything.Check for oil and level was ok. When I take hose from compressor and plug with my hand the air does not push me away."
Does anyone have any thoughts please and thank you. The new air compressor is a 2 piston Wabco in a volvo D12 engine.
No air pressure buildup wabco air compressor installed 5hours ago

I'm just guessing. Does he have any restrictions with the intake.
Compessor can only pump out what it can suck in.
Good luck.Heavyd, Rideandrepair, Expeditor and 2 others Thank this. -
Maybe some valves after the compressor that are draining it off.
Freightliner Classic won't build airKatW and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I agree check the intake to the compressor for kinks or restrictions. Disconnect the intake at the compressor and if it starts building that is your issues.
The discharge may not blow your hand off the compressor like you would think. Leaks in the discharge hoses from the compressor to the air dryer are very common. The new compressor may have temporarily masked this problem. Spray soapy water on the discharge hose to check for leaks while running. Pay close attention to the cloth hose right after the stainless or steel line from the compressor. This area is common for leaks because of the heat generated by the air compressor. The stainless is on their to take the heat. It is also really hard to hear the leaks in this area with the engine running. By the time you shut it off you cant hear the leak anymore.
My first step would be to run a new/temporary line from the compressor to the dryer to see if it builds.x1Heavy, KatW, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
Also check this: The compressor has a small hose to the head, normally 1/4 inch. It receives air pressure from the governor causing it to cut out, stop building air. When the is no air from the governor the compressor builds air. If this hose becomes stopped up it can hold air on the compressor. Unhook it and see if it builds pressure. Do not take new parts for granted.
Best of luck with that but now I must get back to business.x1Heavy, AModelCat, Oldironfan and 1 other person Thank this. -

Follow the steps from the beginning. Don't skip any simply because 'you think it's good'. You might miss something important. -
most likely the hose and pipe between compressor and air dryer need to be replaced leaking air before it even gets to the dryer see a lot of that on volvo engines.

Did he change the filter on the air dryer or cartridge. Did he try draining the air tanks?
x1Heavy and Oldironfan Thank this. -
KatW: I am sure he is up and running by now. What Goodysnap and nazriza posted is the most likely problem. We would like to know what the problem was please. We all share and learn that way.
